The Town That Remembers
Chapter Sixty-Seven
Stoney Sept arrives as bells before it does as stone.
After the open road, Alys and Arthur reach a town that has made a habit of sorting strangers. Carts to one side, armed men slowed at the gate, names taken, coin weighed, horses counted, rooms priced, and silence sold by the night.
This is the town that once hid Robert Baratheon while loyalist men searched door by door. Alys knows the story. Arthur knows what it cost. Neither of them can afford to forget that Stoney Sept has always understood the value of wrong rooms, wrong names, and doors that open somewhere else.
So Ser Addam Cave and his wife Alysanne enter through the gate, choose the Peach over the septry, and try to become ordinary before anyone decides what kind of story they are.
But the Peach keeps a book.
By night, Stoney Sept has already begun making a version of them. Cheaper than truth, easier than proof, and much more likely to travel.
The open country was never safe. But a town that knows how to remember? That might be worse.
