Before boarding the plane, Amado looks back at you one last time. This wasn’t a new thing, him leaving for work. It’s what he did.
You often said your temporary goodbyes at home, but this time you wanted to come. It was a decision you regretted, it felt scarier, more final this way. You decide then and there, this would be the last time you come to the site for take off.
As you watch the plane rise in the sky, your mind feels like a super highway. Amado was damn good at his job, you knew he would return home, just like he always did. Still, you can’t shake the nervousness. Though he traveled with Miguel often, these trips stressed you out the most.
You knew Miguel for the longest, in fact it's how you met Amado. But Miguel was far from the kid you knew growing up and with each year of success, Miguel only raised the stakes higher and higher, causing you to worry about Amado even more. Worries aside, meeting the man in black changed your life forever, Amado Carrillo Fuentes had your heart, and you had his.
…
You never slept well the nights he was away. You tried to calm your nerves by sleeping on his side of the bed. It was a small comfort, especially when you could still smell him on the sheets. You always looked forward to the moment the phone rang, the voice of your love on the other end.
Everything went as usual at first. Then on the 4th day, radio silence. Amado stopped calling and all your fears crept to the surface. Was he hurt? Did they crash? We’re they captured? . The minutes felt like hours, and sleep became a memory.
It wasn’t until the 5th night when the phone finally rang. It was late. Your body was drifting off to sleep, no longer able to stay awake. The shrill ring startles you. Reaching around in the dark, you find the phone and bring it to your ear.
Your voice is unsteady from lack of sleep and crying, “hello?”
It’s him. His voice brings an instant feeling of relief and you sit up in bed as you listen. The trip didn’t go as planned, they ran into some trouble but eventually found a way out of it. Now, they were heading home, set to arrive in the morning.
…
For the first time in days, you sleep deeply, so much so you don't wake until the second alarm. You promised yourself you wouldn't go to the airfield again, but this time, you had to.
After getting ready, you eat a little breakfast and pack something for Amado. From the sound of his voice last night, you guessed he hadn’t slept or really ate himself. One of the guards Amado gave you drives you out. The ride is long, the hour early, but it's all worth it to see his face when he gets off that plane.
When you arrive, you can barely stand still, but try to fight the urge to pace. You look at your watch so much, you eventually take it off and slide into your bag.
Was he injured? Hurt? What happened?
You could kill Miguel, you really could.
Before the anger could rise any higher, the plane finally comes into view. The minutes all mesh together until you finally see that door open. Miguel steps out first, and from the look of him, you knew Amado was likely a bit beat up too. You save any questions for later and wait for Amado.
When his tall black clad frame exits the plane, you smile and run towards him. He’s a little hurt, but nothing looks too serious. He flashes that wide smile at you, and in that moment, you know everything will be okay.
Amado tries his best to hide any physical discomfort as he draws you into his arms. You don’t hug him as tight as you want to, just in case he’s hurt or bruised under this shirt.
On the phone last night, he asked you to wait at home, but from your tone he knew you would show up, no matter what he said. But as Amado held you, he was relieved. Seeing you first thing made him forget about the way his body ached.
Amado kisses the top of your head, breathing into your hair. A moment later, you look up at him and remove his shades. His brown eyes are warm and soft on yours.
“There’s my girl.”
…
The home you kept together was always warm, but something about this trip really made it feel like a sanctuary. Amado needed this, he needed you. He didn’t say much on the ride home, he held you close and littered your head and hands with kisses.
At home, you made it your goal to help Amado relax. You ran a hot bath for him and had one of his guys pick up take out from his favorite restaurant. It took some effort, Amado liked to pamper you, he barely let you do it to him.
But the moment Amado steps into the bath, he’s thankful. Maybe being the one getting pampered wasn’t such a bad thing. After dinner, you relax in the backyard, enjoying the beautiful view. The entire time Amado holds you close, your fingers interlaced with his.
As you give Amado a shoulder massage, he breaks the comfortable silence with words. Not about what happened, he assures you he’ll tell you in the morning.
Amado tells you how much he missed you and how happy he is to be home. You can visually see tension leaving his body.
Just before your hands get tired, Amado turns around to look at you,
“Come, sit next me,”
When you do, he takes your hands and kisses the palm of your left hand, then your right. Amado lets his nose linger against your skin,
“I love the way you smell.” He moans. His hands move up the length of neck and rest on your cheeks.
You’ve never had anyone look at you the way he does. His eyes are full of love, adoration, and gratitude. Amado kisses you, “Thank you for this, all of this.”
You rest one hand against his heart as you gaze at each other, “You deserve it, El Señor de Los Cielos.”
Amado closes his eyes and rests his forehead against yours, “I missed you so fucking much.”
You kiss his chin, the tip of his nose, then his ear, “I missed you too.”
Being quarantined had its set of issues; missing your man was one of them. You were on a work trip when locked down began, putting a great distance between you and Amado. You kept busy, distracted yourself, and tried to stay as calm as possible. Of course, this was easier said than done.
As two months pass by, it becomes unbearable. When your last flight got canceled and rescheduled, you feel utterly defeated. Even as someone who likes alone time, you hated this.
The best part of the day was sitting in front of that stupid computer screen and seeing his face. The way his smile lit up the screen when he saw you, the way he pushed his long hair behind his right ear, the way he ran his hand over his beard and leaned in close to the screen as if you were right there before him.
No one gave you butterflies and made you laugh as much as he did. Amado, despite his serious appearance, was silly with you. He was a gentle and loving man who always made you smile.
…
As time passes, your love for him deepens, so does your longing for him. Despite the distance, you get creative and keep each other satisfied. Amado was a softie, he’d send you flowers, treats, even having your favorite food items delivered to your door. You’d even make dinner together so you could enjoy dinner dates.
As time continued on, the two of you found equilibrium. It seemed things would finally let up and you could be together again. Then the rough patch came. Despite having high hopes, lock done was extended and a trip you planned together was canceled.
The disappointment hit hard. You missed him, you wanted to see him. Your disappointment was further due to the fact you finally planned to tell him the extent of your feelings on that trip. You started dating shortly before this all happened, then you had to adjust.
You loved Amado, you knew it with every fiber of your being. Though neither of you have said it yet, the three words lingered on your tongue for a while. You thought the trip would be the perfect time to tell him.
Depression washed over you after the trip fell through. It felt like your sunshine was taken away, and you had to sit in darkness. Amado quickly notices your change of moon, but you downplay it, telling him you’d be fine.
…
Still in a funk, the day comes when you try to reach him unsuccessfully. You knew he was a busy man, so you left him a message and hope to hear from him soon. The next day you wake to a rainstorm, it's actually beautiful to watch from the arched windows of your rental.
Your reply from Amado is brief, he tells you he’ll catch up with you later. In the back of your mind, you find yourself worrying a little. With all this time apart, could he have met someone else? Did he think you did?
You decide to distract yourself from these thoughts and turn the tv on to watch a movie. Only 10 minutes into the film, there’s a knock at your door. You weren’t expecting any guests and were hesitant to answer it.
Wondering if it's a delivery from Amado, you cautiously go to the door and look out the peephole. You gasp and make quick work of opening the door, finding him on the other side of it with a wide smile and a gift in his hands.
It happened so fast. You don’t remember jumping into his arms, but you do. You drown eachother in kisses and Amado walks you both back into the apartment, kicking the door closed with his foot.
He was here. He was really here. You could smell him, touch him, taste him.
You two stay this way for a while, then eventually move over to the couch and sit.
Amado caresses your face, “I couldn't take it. I had to be with you,” he pauses, like there is something more he wants to say, "I love you."
You feel happy tears come to your eyes and move even closer to him, “I love you, Amado.” You confess.
The next kiss moves you beyond words, a kiss to say a thousand words and deepen a bond between two souls. The kiss leaves you breathless.
You kiss his cheek, his neck, then his lips as he watches you,
“I hope you bought the glasses.” You trace the shape around his eyes
Amado chuckles and pulls you close again, “You know I did.”
You feel happy, hopeful, loved. Now, no matter how long this thing lasted, at least you were together.
