Advent Calendar Day 17: Amahl

When I was a kid, my dad ran an opera company, and every Christmas (at least most of the ones that I remember) he put on a one-act Christmas opera by Gian Carlo Menotti: Amahl and the Night Visitors.

I know this opera backwards and forwards, having watched it who knows how many times, sat in on many of the rehearsals leading to those performances, and even being in it, one season as Amahl (I think it was only once, but it may have been twice) and another, later, as a camel driver.

Amahl is the story of a crippled boy whose livelihood (goats and shepherding) has been slowly whittled away by economic hardship until his only avenue is begging, which he intends to undertake the next day (though he is an unrepentant liar, so he’s probably just going to lounge on a rock or something).  

The Three Kings stop at his house on their way to Bethlehem and seek lodgings.  The impudent Amahl pesters them with a series of comic interactions, and the poor mother, with no other means by which to support her sickly child, makes to steal a little of the treasure being taken to some baby who won’t even appreciate it.  She’s caught, and the kings forgive her in Christ’s name.  Amahl, moved by this show of mercy, decides to give Jesus a present, too: the only thing he has: his crutch.  When he reaches out to pass it to the kings, he stumbles, and catches himself on his previously lame leg.  Miraculously healed, he dances around and leaves with the kings for Bethlehem.

Oh!  And there’s one of those villager parades mentioned in the last essay.

The opera was the first ever commissioned for television, and, airing on Christmas Eve in 1951, had the largest audience ever for a televised opera.  It was a yearly tradition on NBC until 1966, when disagreements between the network and composer led him to take the broadcast rights away.

What I learned from being a dresser for a weekend

In the theater world, time works very differently from how it works in business or in academia. 

Theater time is valued, measured, tracked, and spent quite differently from the ways I am used to. I could have surmised as much, and indeed I anticipated that as a dresser I would spend a lot of time waiting around for things to happen, but it was still a bit of a culture shock to go from an office setting to the theater. That was the thing that made the biggest impression on me.

Other sundry notes and observations:

I was assigned to the dressing room with the female chorus and the dancers (all school-aged girls). There were about twenty performers in one dressing room and it was a zoo, especially in the stir-crazy 45 minute interval between when they finished getting into costume and when they were called to their places on the stage level. I had dreaded being assigned to this room but in the end I was glad that I felt more useful than the dressers for the principals, who must have had very little to do, since there are no quick changes in Amahl.

At one point, someone backstage addressed the conductor un-ironically as "Maestro." Is that really a thing?

During the hour and a half break between two back-to-back shows, the harpist stayed alone in the pit and played music, I don't know what. "John Rutter, I'm guessing," said one of the members of the chorus. "I assume she's practicing for her next show." It was a lovely little private concert that we could hear in the hallway behind the pit or over the intercom.

I signed up to be a dresser for an opera next weekend! 

This will be my first backstage experience and I am kind of excited about it. Elaboration after the jump . . .

I live in a small city with a little one-horse opera company that only puts on a few productions a year. They are doing "Amahl and the Night Visitors" next weekend and I'm volunteering to be a dresser for the show. (Well technically they are paying me $50 for thirteen and a half hours of work as an "independent contractor." Hah.) 

I am very interested to see some of the backstage business of an opera for myself. I have no experience in any form of stage performance, at least not since I was maybe eight or ten years old and did some kind of school play that I barely remember. 

Lately when I watch opera I am enraptured by the performance but I also find myself thinking, THIS THING IS FASCINATING. HOW IS IT MADE? So I started looking for opportunities to learn more, and soon I found this call for volunteers, no experience necessary. Sounds perfect.

I kind of assume the job will involve a lot of waiting around for things to happen, but I really don't know. Apparently my duties could include steaming costumes and sewing on buttons if necessary. 

Already I am learning small things. Today I started getting emails about rehearsals and I counted fifty-nine names on the contact list for this semi-professional show with six principal singers plus choruses. This tells me something about what goes into making an opera performance.

Those of you who are singers or otherwise involved with the performance arts have permission to laugh (gently please) at my fascinated ignorance and my excitement to, y'know, steam costumes and whatnot.
