Feel free to jump to the last paragraph for a simple answer.

Let’s begin with some context? Or maybe I just need something to justify my thoughts…

I want to start by saying that, probably for the last 50 years?, the music genres that P most actively listens to are rock and blues. I think that says a lot. I don’t know, for me, that’s so obvious and so intertwined with his story and history and spirit and so yes, that’s what I think.

Again, let’s go back a bit. Out of the four of them, P is apparently the less musical, which is pretty obvious considering pf Lisb and C I mean – ah! Music is such a major part in their culture. Even Braga has a musical tradition (that also sprawls to the rest of Baixo Minho) between religion and vulgar folklore – did you know that, at least since the 18th century, Zé Pereiras kind of groups would open processions? And gigantones come from giant S.Cristovãos!, pretty cool and so B 👌

(And don’t you think folklore groups over here in Porto are so weird?...It’s usually a mix from different places, none of which actually from Porto, but from surrounding villages, etc., and try to make something out of it. They try…) So we don’t even have folklore to grasp to, anyway! We don’t even have nice traditional songs about Porto, I think, which pains me lots.

I do think P is a fairly good singer tho, but not a “public” singer. He usually brushes it off with “pf no I can’t sing at all, I’m doing you a favor” and/or sings goofy, but C knows what’s up you sing just fine I heard you once but I won’t tell anyone cus I respect you ❤and the opposite is B who knows she can’t sing but gives 0 fucks about other people’s opinions /sings louder. This because, as I was saying, as a city we don’t have that side but BUT but but you know when you go take a walk, for whatever reason, in the early morning (because you have to draw things for college) or at night in those narrow streets of Sé and Vitória, and you can listen to people singing in their daily lives or hanging out with friends/family in their local tasca and its amazing and I love it! Because they’re singing for themselves and you’re allowed to be a part of their intimacy! That’s something that I can relate to P so much as a character. For me he sings in that sense of privacy – and he has his walls build high so you can barely grasp it and when you do oh boy.

I’m trying not to drabble too much and getting lost, but I think this is making sense and actually building up for something, wait –

--- As I was saying: rock and blues. Go straight to the point. That’s exactly it: it happened, basically after Portugal “opened up” in 1974, Portuguese rock started to really and finally happen. And Porto did have some of the best artists/bands, as you know!

Rock music from the 80’s/90’s usually reflects P so well. So well. It’s so good.

(I feel that the 20th century was so hard on this city. If the first half was marked by poverty and dictatorship, the second led to a profound “identity crisis” with joining the EU, downtown’s progressive degradation and shifting of the economy. I mean, think about it: you’re the second in your country (ok), but what are you in Europe and in THE WORLD. You’re nothing. You always had things figured out but now it’s just…meaningless? The thing you’ve doing basically your entire existence – like commerce and trading – is obsolete and…!I like to explore that as a character, and looking back I think this is quite clear in our current social construction and physically in our urban development. I think a shift on this kind of state of mind only started to occur in the early 2000’s).

And for the first time music was there!!That gritty, decadent, unsettled Porto of the 80’s/90’s…Old and dirty and ugh. And singers just went “look at shitty city! Isn’t it the best?” It’s the swing of the drug addict “chico fininho”, it’s the proud drug, and men spiting on the floor and old women selling fish (and the smell of fish!), it’s the fog and the smoke and the kids swimming in a polluted river. That’s the Porto blues, man! I love it. I LOVE IT And his voice found a match and he didn’t have to sing pretty I AM GOING TO CRY ssshhh there there young queijo its ok

To finally answer your question straightforwardly: I guess his favorite port. artists are, generally speaking, those rock bands from the 70’s and 80’s, not necessarily from Porto, tho. Of course he enjoys other genres and artists and keeps his ears eagerly open to new bands, but these are the ones je always comes back to and can’t really get tired of (maybe for nostalgia as well).
