Here’s Brooklyn singer/songwriter Wakey Wakey (aka Michael Grubbs) and his take on the Major Lazer mega-hit ‘Lean On,’ turning the dancefloor banger into a mournful ode to nostalgia and youth, featuring Amanda Lo on violin.
Grubbs has also given some of his other favourite tracks a makeover, including Phantogram’s ‘You Don’t Get Me High Anymore’ and the Irving Berlin classic ‘I’ve Got My Love To Keep Me Warm,’ both featured on his latest EP Covers Episode One, along with ‘Lean On.’
Grubbs explains why he chose to cover ‘Lean On’:
This cover was initially requested by a fan. At the time it was a pretty inescapable song, and it’s marketing and hook were so aggressive, I had never really listened closely to it. When I took the time to dig in I really connected to it’s story. This song features Amanda Lo on violin, who’s also one of my favorite violinists in the city. We recreated the synth solo note for note from the Major Lazer version and it’s one of my favorite moments in the song.
