I'm a little late with my reflections on 2019. As the year came to a close I felt I had not made enough time for art or printmaking. Looking back through my photos, I quickly realized that was not the case! I have simply been bad about not sharing. I spent a lot of time in 2019 experimenting with new mediums. These include a Japanese textile dying process called shibori, sculpting and painting miniature figures, as well as (not pictured) origami Christmas ornaments, and ceramics. I don't share a lot of this because it never feels quite finished. Regarding printmaking, it seems at first I did not do much, but thats not quite accurate either. I chose to make fewer small, one-color prints in favor of larger, colored images. I am particularly proud of my last two prints: the 4-color cicadas, and the two-color running rabbits. Both are larger than my standard, and feature more detail and color. With a couple of the smaller images from the year, the frog and mockingbird, I chose to make various editions to get more mileage from an image, as well as explore techniques and ideas for printing. A lot of these projects took time away from drawing, which is important for idea exploration and maintaining skill. I modified my morning routine to include time for drawing and sketching. I quite enjoy this strange new time, even though, I never in a million years thought I'd become a "morning person". I am excited to see what 2020 has in store for me and my artistic endeavors. I recently joined a local ceramics class and am very excited about the possibilities. I have already sculpted numerous miniature creatures and am eager to paint and fire them. I also want to explore pottery and glazing. I think this new hobby will go along nicely with my new love of bonsai and a lack of planters. I want to continue making larger, more complex prints, with a few smaller ones sprinkled in between. Last but not least, I want to be more active sharing what I make!
