This turned into a Pokemon AU. I hope that’s okay.
33. “Close your eyes and hold out your hands.”
“Oh dear. I’m out of Pokeballs.”
Shirogane sighs in defeat. She watches as the Dratini flees backinto the water.
Amami puts a sympathetic hand on her shoulder and says, “Ithink you did well.”
“Please don’t lie, Amami-kun. It’s plain to see I’m terribleat this. What kind of trainer doesn’t bring extra Pokeballs?”
“You’re still a beginner,” Amami answers easily. “Once youget the hang of it, you’ll be a pro trainer in no time.” He smiles at her. “It’sgetting late. Do you want to head back?”
She nods, and together they begin the short journey back tothe Pokemon Centre.
“I know I shouldn’t get so depressed,” Shirogane says asthey walk, lowering her head. “But I can’t help feeling disappointed. I wasreally hoping I could catch my first Pokemon today, and a beautiful Dratiniwould have been perfect…”
“We can try again tomorrow.”
“I… I guess that’s true.”
Amami looks at Shirogane’s downcast face, and stops. Hesighs and reaches into his pocket.
“Hey, close your eyes and hold out your hands.”
“Huh? Why?” Despite her confusion, Shirogane complies. Shefrowns when she feels Amami rest something on the palms of her hands.
“You can open your eyes now.”
Shirogane does so, and finds herself looking at a Pokeball.
“This is…?”
“It’s… a present.” Amami seems a little embarrassed as heexplains. “I wasn’t planning to give it to you yet, but you look like you needcheering up. I’m sure as long as you have this little guy you’ll have a fullparty of Pokemon before you even know it.”
Silent, Shirogane opens the Pokeball. After a familiar flashof light, an Azurill blinks up at her, jumping on its own tail excitedly.
“Ah, how adorable!” Shirogane kneels, petting the Azurill asshe stares at it with shining eyes. “He’s perfect! Thank you so much,Amami-kun.”
“He’s a little lively, so I hope he doesn’t give you toomuch trouble.”
Shirogane scoops up the Azurill, who seems happy to behugged. “It’s plainly obvious I’ll be able to catch that Dratini with Ama-chanon my side!”
Amami tilts his head. “Ah, Ama-chan…?”
“That’s what I’m going to call him,” Shirogane says. “It’snot awkward, is it? Since you gave him to me, I thought naming him after youmade sense…”
“Oh no, it just surprised me a little.” Amami laughs, andpats her on the shoulder. “We should go—it’s getting dark, and if you’re reallygoing to catch a Dratini then you and Ama-chan need plenty of rest.”
Smiling, Shirogane says a quiet, “Let’s go, Ama-chan,” and followsAmami through the dimming light.
