Winter had finally come to Summer Valley and Larkin and I were still stuck in this weird place in our relationship. It was mainly because my mind started overreacting about every single part of our relationship. I started doubting if it was a good idea to continue on when Larkin would be graduating and after I graduated high school I planned on traveling and not looking back. Would Larkin go with me if I asked? Was that even an option? My mom was usually too busy to talk about anything with me and sometimes I felt as if she avoided me on purpose. As usual, I turned to the one person who I felt understood me better than my own parents. Lydia Lane West. Hannah: I am sorry for bothering you because I know you are technically my boyfriend’s mom but my mom isn’t really around much to talk to and I- Mrs. West: Hannah darling, it’s okay. You don’t have to explain why you need someone to talk to. I am always happy to be here for you and listen even if you are having issues with my silly boy. Hannah: Mrs. West, you ever feel like you would have to sacrifice the things you love for the person you love? I know you said you never felt like falling in love with Mr. West and settling down in Summer Valley was a mistake, but I mean did you ever think you could have continued what you love the most and been with him? Mrs. West: Hannah, I know what you are attempting to say and you shouldn’t sacrifice wanting to get out of this town and see the world for Larkin. My darling girl, I feel like sometimes adults impose too much pressure on their children and they feel trapped or feel obligated. Larkin wouldn’t want you to give up your dreams because you think he requires you to. I wasn’t certain if Mrs. West was talking about me or if she was thinking about the pressure Larkin’s dad put on him when she looked away. Hannah: I just want to get out and see everything and Larkin is going to be going off to college. What if he doesn’t want to stay together or if we have to make that choice to split up. Mrs.West: Hannah never feel obligated to give up what you want for someone else. Do what is in your heart, and you will never be unhappy and I sincerely mean that. Sweetie, you are so young and I think you are overwhelming yourself with thoughts of the distant future. Hannah: It all just seems to be hanging there and just waiting to pounce. Mrs. West: I believe one thing all young people should learn is to live in the present and take time as it comes. You will sleep a lot better at night if you do.
