Absolute Dorks (affectionate).
i whole heartedly believe that grace being alone at the bar on the last night before the crew went into space solidified how stratt and others around him saw his life
from outside perspective he looks isolated, unhappy, and lonely. especially in comparison to everyone around him. most people are laughing, smiling, and chatting. they're also not alone. they have other people they're enjoying their time with. in comparison to grace, they're having a much better time if held to conventional standards.
but that's where people, especially stratt, misunderstood him til the very end. just because he was alone, and wasn't enjoying his time as outwardly as other people, doesn't mean that he wasn't actually having fun. it doesn't mean that he wasn't apart of the moment. it doesnt mean that he wasn't apart of the comradery.
which by extension, is how they viewed his life. just because he lived a conventionally lonely life, people believed that he didn't live a good one. that, by some weird logic, his life held less meaning.
ryland grace had a good life. he loved his job. he loved earth. he loved his students.
but that didn't matter to people in the grand scheme of things. he was still sitting alone at the bar. that's all they saw.
