ernie: a bath odyssey

okay so since you're my puppy yoda--pepper's recently started getting really bitey? Like hard bites that go beyond play nips at playtime. and idk if it's because her teeth are getting ready to fall out or what's going on there. did you and Ernie deal w anything similar??
ernie definitely went through a teething phase (and occasionally revisits it - he loves tearing up paper), but he’s never bit to hurt someone, which i have thought might be a product of breeding, honestly. poodles are retrievers, so i think that might be why ernie’s bite is so soft. he’ll certainly get toothy, especially when he’s riled up, but he doesn’t ever bite down on people, and even with his toys he’s very careful when he’s carrying something or holding it in his mouth. he used to have some problems carrying his heavier toys because he wouldn’t sink his teeth in enough. obvs when he settles down to rip something to shreds that’s a different story.
the advice we were given for when he jumps up on people or gets toothy (because though he is not biting hurtfully the average person still doesn’t love the experience of being lovingly, pointily mouthed by a 50-lb dog, lol) is to give a firm, fast, non-hysterical “no!” and turn your attention to something else. when we were training ernie not to jump up, we’d literally turn around and stare at the door or the wall until he sat his butt down. it worked. mostly. now he just runs in overjoyed circles around everybody new who comes in the door except me. me he still jumps on at least once every single time.
for biting we’d say “no bite!” specifically, put down any dog toys, and stop playing with him. i know some people recommend a little smack or flick to the nose, to surprise but not hurt the dog, which is how we trained stella 17 years ago, but i did that reflexively with ernie once or twice and it didn’t work because the little beast thought i was playing with him and he got even MORE excited.
you can also try spraying pepper with something if you can keep it handy. you can even just use a little spray bottle of water if all you’re going for is shock factor, at least at first. though if pepper thinks water is fun it won’t work, haha.
