On the afternoon of January 13th, 1996, 9-year-old Amber Hagerman went on a bike ride with her 5-year-old brother Ricky. To make the most of the warm winter day in Arlington, Texas, they headed to an abandoned grocery store parking lot that had a bike ramp many kids in the neighbourhood used.

Amber and Ricky spent time playing in the parking lot. And after a while, Ricky decided to head back home, leaving his sister to enjoy cycling on her own.

Minutes later, Amber was abducted.

Four days after Amber’s kidnapping, a man walking his dog stumbled upon her body in a creek behind Forest Hills Apartments, an apartment complex less than five miles from the parking lot where Amber had last been seen riding her bike.

An autopsy later revealed that Amber had been kept alive for two days after being taken. She had been beaten and sexually assaulted before her throat was cut and her body was tossed into the creek.

Amber’s murder remains unsolved.

Amber Hagerman and Amber Alerts

Amber Hagerman was 9-years-old and lived in Texas. On 13th January 1996, at 4pm in the afternoon Amber rode her bike into the parking lot of an abandoned grocery store. A man in a black pick up truck abducted her and forced her into the truck while she kicked and screamed, she was then driven away. A huge police search and appeals for Amber's return began. Five days later Amber's naked body was found in a creek, her throat was cut. Amber's murderer has never been found.

After Amber's funeral an Amber alert system was designed, similarly to emergency broadcasts for severe weather, missing children alerts interrupt television and radio and play a loud noise when a child is reported missing. Since 1996 experts believe more than 800 children have been found safely due to the alert and it has been shown that abductors are more likely to release children when they discover an Amber Alert has been broadcast.

On January 15th, 1996 Amber Hagerman, the namesake behind the AMBER Alert, was abducted by an unknown man while she was out riding bicycles with her little brother, Ricky. Amber's kidnapping shook the quiet down of Arlington, Texas to its core. A local station called WFAA-TV played a crucial role in covering the case. They followed the story from start to finish, working side-by-side with the Hagerman family. Donna personally invited them into most private family moments during their fight to bring Amber home. Her hope was that the significant media focus would help bring in vital information regarding her daughter's whereabouts. Two days after the kidnapping, WFAA-TV sat with Amber's parents and grandparents in their home as everyone watched news coverage of the body being recovered, waiting for confirmation on whether or not it was their darling Amber. For the staff of WFAA-TV, this story was personal.

In the year prior, WFAA-TV filmed a special about single mothers struggling in poverty. Donna Norris, Amber's mother, was featured in the story. The camera crew followed the little family around for several months, documenting their joys and their struggles. Amber loved school and received multiple awards for her academic achievements and for being a good, thoughtful student. During an interview, the little girl proudly displayed her album of accomplishments. WFAA-TV was also with the family on November 25th, 1995 for Amber's ninth birthday. Donna adorned their home with pink balloons and Lisa Frank party decorations. Amber was able to invite a few of her close friends, and together they celebrated her special day alongside her mother, Ricky, and the camera crew. The highlight of the party was when Amber opened up a gift that her mother excitedly saved up for: Pocahontas bedding. It would become Amber's last birthday.

AMBER stands for America's Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response.

It's named for Amber Hagerman. 9-year-old Amber was kidnapped while riding her bike in an Arlington, Texas parking lot on January 13, 1996. Her body was found four days later less than four miles from where she went missing.

Frustrated community members wanted to know why there was no way to be alerted to child abductions in their area and thus the AMBER Alert system was created.

When will an AMBER Alert be issued?

There is reasonable belief by law enforcement an abduction has taken place

Law enforcement believes the child is in danger of serious bodily injury or death

There is adequate descriptive information about the victim and the abduction

The abduction is of a child 17 years old or younger

The child's name, critical data and the Child Abduction flag have been entered into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) system

Amber's murder is still unsolved, but her mother, Donna Williams, has stated that "she didn't die in vain. She's still helping take care of our children and I'm proud of everything she'd done for our children here."

According to the Amber Alert Network Brazos Valley, to date, 1,085 children have been safely recovered due to the AMBER Alert system.
