something i didn’t pick on before was the importance of both amber and mary jo being at the star lasso when everything happens.
jupe and mary jo were the two survivors of the gordy attack. an animal who was exploited for fame and money, who was never treated like he should of been which led to him lashing out and killing their two co-stars. the actor who ran through yelling at gordy only to get killed behind the door is a perfect example of that — he was yelling at gordy like he was a person, because they don’t know how to treat gordy like an animal because he’s being exploited like any other actor would have been for hollywood. jupe and mary jo both survived, though mary jo was horrifically injured from the experience. but it’s worth noting that mary jo was jupe’s first crush — which i think is very important, but i’ll touch on that later.
then, at star lasso, jupe is doing the same thing to jean jacket that was done to gordy — exploiting for fame and money. jupe isn’t treating jean jacket like an animal, or any way that it should be treated, but just uses bait to exploit jean jacket for an audience to pay him. and because he doesn’t know how to treat jean jacket other than for exploitation — which is how he remembers gordy and how he was treated — then it ends in disaster.
mary jo is the reminder of the gordy incident and how serious it was. jupe talks about it like it’s nothing — having that secret room to exploit from, talking about snl — but mary jo was disfigured, has a wheelchair, and is a very serious reminder of how bad the incident was. she represents the gordy incident. her being his first crush ties him even further to that incident because of that connection. (thank you to @somepallings for telling me this on my last nope post)
amber represents jupe’s second chance. a chance for him to drop all of the gordy stuff, to settle down with his kids. but instead he does what he’s been doing since a kid, latching on to fame and money wherever he can, and ends up getting them killed. the audience are supposed to focus on the fact that amber is there from the part where she yells into the audience to help jupe with his show — because she trusts him. she’s seen jean jacket every friday and yet she still trusts jupe, in the same way that mary jo trusted him to go there.
mary jo being killed represents the path of destruction the gordy incident caused in jupe, and how he went full circle. how both mary jo and jupe never really did survive gordy if the incident just led to this. amber being killed represented how jupe never really did change, and she ends up as a second mary jo.
Love this family
