AMD has a new budget King with the Athlon 200GE. You get 2 cores 4 threads and Vega 3 graphics. This is enough to play a lot of games at 720p or 1080p with reduced settings or scaling. I wasn't expecting much out of a £55 APU, and having used the older FM2 based A8 and A10 chips, i was setting myself up for disappointment. But i am pleasantly surprised that AMD have managed to create a low cost option for budget builders and PC gamers. The chip gently sips power thanks to the 35w TDP and easily deals with general PC tasks, and also has the ability to play games! Awesome! I the video we discuss the setup and the costs involved, and there are game play recordings of Fortnite, DOTA2, Team Fortess 2, Beach Buggy Racing, Asphalt 8, Far cry 5 and some CSGO.
With a mixture of 1080p and 720p with some scaling all the games proved to be playable and some of them were actually very enjoyable. This chip is good for builders that want it all on a budget, or for anyone that has a future upgrade in mind but want to get going now. I would imagine that these chips will have a pretty good resell value being that they only cost £55 to start with, so any second hands sells will maybe only lose a few pounds when traded.
The chip also asks the question of where the 2200G fits in? Is it worth almost double the asking price for the extra two cores, but no extra threads, and will the Vega 8 be twice as fast in real world use over the Vega 3. The lack of overclocking on the 200GE is a real shame, and is probably a move to not kill off sales of the 2200G.
Anyway i am happy with the 200GE and what it can do. What are your thoughts or opinions?
