1924: American Indians Granted U.S. Citizenship
American Indian and Alaska Native Veterans have served in every branch of the U.S. Military for well over the past 200 years, It goes without saying that their efforts and histories of distinguished services should be recognized.
“Throughout our Army's history, American Indians have served valiantly and with distinction in times of peace and war, while also fighting for the right to be an equal part of our nation. American Indians have a distinguished legacy in our Army." - Army senior leaders
The Civil War- American Indians have eagerly served a government which did not always keep its word to their ancestors.
By fighting with the European-Americans, Native Americans hoped to gain favor with the prevailing government by supporting the war effort. They also believed war service might mean an end to discrimination and relocation from ancestral lands to western territories. While the war raged and African Americans were proclaimed free, the U.S. government continued its policies of submission, removal, or extermination of Native Americans.
12,000 for World War I- When World War I started, American Indians were not considered U.S. citizens, but that did not stop approximately 12,000 Natives from volunteering to serve in the U.S. military.
Inspired by the high rate of American Indian enlistment during World War I, President Calvin Coolidge signs the Indian Citizenship Act. American Indians, the first peoples of this country, are the last to receive citizenship. U.S. citizenship does not automatically make American Indians eligible to vote in some states, including Arizona, New Mexico, and South Dakota.

Couple: We'd definitely have to upgrade these granite countertops and I don't know how I feel about these top of the line appliances. We need to look at more places.
