This was Godzilla as he was going to appear in the original American film in the mid-1990s, as directed by Jan de Bont, before Sony/Tri-Star pulled the plug supposedly because the budget was too high.

Then we got the 1998 Devlin/Emmerich version, which ended up costing more than de Bont's film would have.

Two different American Godzilla

Legendary Godzilla: what did you do to him

G94: nothing just nothing at all

Legendary Godzilla: oh really nothing but why is zilla crying

Zilla: it's because he's mad at me

Legendary Godzilla: okay but why Zilla

G94: It because I was going to be the first American Godzilla movie on the big screen fighting a giant monster on New York City but unfortunately it was scrapped thanks to him

Zilla: I said I was sorry just because you were scrapped doesn't mean you can say mean things to me

legendary Godzilla: all right would you two stop arguing I know they don't like your movie zilla but, there are some people that liked it even you zilla and G94 everyone still like your design and I know it looks cool but, still you can't be mean to Zilla everyday people will still remember you and without Zilla there wouldn't be another American Godzilla movie plus you're not the only one that were scrapped or unmade Godzilla movie monsters

Godzilla 1956 (American)

Got to give it up to the OG Lizard

It’s been a while since I’ve seen a classic black and white movie. Makes me happy that this time around I get to see Godzilla in his original form, his debut moment.

I bet you’re wondering why I stuck American up there in the title. Well it’s cause the version I watched was the American one. Not even joking this was the 1954 American remake of the 1954 Japanese movie. And listen I tried to find the original Japanese, I wanted to see the original Japanese. But all I could find to easily watch was the American version. And at first I thought it was just going to be bad English dubbing over the movie. NOPE! From the very first scene it was a retelling of the Godzilla movie.

Overview: Newspaper Reporter Steve Martin (I Know) makes a stop to Japan to visit his old friend. There he begins a series of investigations chronologicaling the frightening saga of Godzilla terrorizing Japan.

I am NOT even joking. When I said scene one I meant scene one. The movie opens on good old Steve in a burnt out husk of a building almost dead, moved to a hospital, and telling the story in flashback. Here’s the main character folks, a white guy that self-inserts him in a better story, all while making it seem more worse than what it is.

Basically what they did is shoot scenes of Steve going to Japan with his helpful police translator, and having important scenes cut back to him looking whatever emotion is required. I think my favorite part is when he interacts with better more important characters, they always have their backs to the camera so the audience wouldn’t tell it’s completely different people. Like, it’s a weird way to do self-inserts here but I admire the commitment. 

What confuses me the most is you have an American Reporter, so ok you’re dubbing the film. But no, he gets a translator. So ok, the original Japanese is going to be peaking through. But wait! Actually, we are going to dub over some of the Japanese characters who we deemed the most important. Which brings up the question of why the hell didn’t you just dub over it in the first place if this is what you are going to do. 

I think that kills me is that I can see the original Japanese story peaking out through the movie, just hidden away by bad cutting and very very very explicit narration. Hell, I was most interested in his 2-sentence sum up of the original love triangle than the rest of the entire movie. Everything else he was just saying “this is what this group says” and “this is how the world reacted” like, it wasn’t even “show and tell” as much as “TELL and have pretty images in the background.” And I am 90% sure they just white explained a local festival dance to somehow fit Godzilla in. Thanks White People.

Also, wanna throw this out there, I totally thought that the American producers just put an eyepatch on the scientist character to make him Evil and the cause of Godzilla. But Nope! Dude just had an eyepatch all along, even in the Japanese version.

And throughout all of this, I still haven’t really touch on the big lizard himself Godzilla. I mean, honestly it’s Godzilla in a 50s movie. The costume looked like a drowned muppet but the destruction and special effects were honestly pretty good, especially for the time period. Unfortunately I just got Super Bored at the end with the repetitive destruction of the city that I sort of clocked out for the last 20 minutes of the movie.

Overall: It was fun to see how far 50s American will go to put in a White Guy Protagonist in a foreign film. It’s creative and laughable as to how authentic they are trying to be with the original source material while gutting it out to be lest impactful. Again, I am so caught up in the whole “random ass white reporter” nonsense that I don’t really have anything to say about Godzilla here, that is how prevalent it was.

Basically, it’s a fun movie to watch just to see how they flubbed the ball, but it might be better to watch the original Japanese if you can (I know I will)
