I spent the day cataloguing some marvelous books which arrived this morning, but I kept returning to this image in a copy of Darlington's Memorials of John Bartram and Humphrey Marshall. Bartram was the first American-born botanist, and founded the first botanical garden in the US. The frontispiece is a tipped-in albumen photo, depicting Bartram with his hand on a magnificent tree, perhaps twice as wide as he was tall. I can only imagine how great that tree felt to his hand.
