The bald eagle is a conservation success story. By one estimate America had some 100,000 nesting pairs in 1782. By 1940 Congress noted that the eagles faced probable extinction, and passed an act that forbade people to do them any harm. By 1963 only 487 nesting pairs survived in mainland America, though Alaska had a healthier population. In June 2007 federal officials said it no longer even counts as an endangered species. The national total is probably substantially higher today, though in places like Vermont state rules still count the bird as threatened. She thinks she misheard him at first. Until she realizes that she didn’t. That’s when she knows it’s genuine, when she sees the pleading look in his eyes. The annoyed way he holds his mouth. Knows that he’s just looking for some reassurance, but she can’t help the way her jaw clenches at his words. The way her mouth fills up with the bitter poison of what she truly wants to say to him because of them. Instead, she lets her eyes narrow, arms crossing over her chest.
