お土産でいただいた「あめせん」// Amesen Cookies I’m not sure cookies is the right word--most senbei are more like crackers, but these were definitely very sweet. The two sesame wafers are sandwiched together with a paste called mizuame (水飴, literally ‘water candy’). Mizuame is analogous to corn syrup and is commonly used in Japanese sweets for its glossy appearance.
When my friends gave this to me, they said to be very careful but wouldn’t tell me why. Well, turns out that when you take that first bite, the dry crackers soak up all your saliva and the sticky mizuame adheres instantaneously to the roof of your mouth. It’s a dangerous snack. Definitely have drinks on hand.
