Sarah MacLean writes heroines that are more than just outsiders– they’re women in-between for various reasons. Women in-between classes, in-between ethnicities, in-between gender roles. She captures this sense of what it is to be a woman with two opposing forces within her– half-nobility, half-merchant class; half-Italian, half-English; with the power of a man but the social rules of a woman. She’s a master of this.
