'why would they need to follow the relic-' because that's what the narrative insisted on in volume 6 after the trainwreck. ozpin stated that the reason the train was attacked was because the relic acted as a beacon for grimm. so using that established fact, it didn't make sense that there were no grimm attacks beyond the ones i stated above. there should have been hordes upon hordes of grimm following them around if the relic was supposedly a magnet for them.
