Since childhood, I have been lucky enough to be in touch of books. I have been a voracious reader and books have always been my treasured possession. More I read, more I become aware of the fact, how little I know. Being a teacher myself, professionally, the one thing I associate myself with is again books. More I learn, more humble I feel. And college street is one place that I have known since my college days, it became more or less synonymous with books. Today, my heart literally broke into pieces seeing the devastation it had to endure. But my heart also filled with gladness that College Street is trying to rise out of ashes like a phoenix. It was not just a Banyan tree. It was a part of my memory. It was a part of my childhood. So many times I walked down the pavement on which it stood, hardly honouring it with even a cursory glance. But still, it stood there, for years more than my existence, harbouring so many lives. Today, one of my childhood memory received the saw and reduced to lifeless logs. It is the Banyan Tree near Standard Chartered Bank crossing near Shyambazar five points crossing. I have spent so many years around here as my maternal uncle and aunty lived here.
