Most people would go study abroad to experience a new culture. You, however, went to get away from the bore that was your hometown. Every day was the same there. Everyone knew each other, and the only place to hang out with friends was the old diner in the square. So the moment you got the email that you were accepted into the program, you immediately began to prepare. Experiencing a new culture was great, but the best thing was the change of pace compared to what you were used to. Being able to go out past 10 p.m. to grab a snack felt like newfound freedom, and you were more than happy to make good use of it.
The moment the plane touched down on home soil, you didn’t expect to feel as happy as you did. You didn’t think you had missed the simplicity of the town that much. More than anything, it was the people you missed during those twelve months away from home. Walking into the arrivals terminal and seeing your best friend Yunah, made you burst into tears. How good it felt to be home again. The drive home was filled with singing, laughter, and of course, chats about your adventures.
“I can’t forget the most important question!” Yunah shrieked. “Did you meet any gorgeous men over there?” She glanced at you with a hopeful look in her eyes. As much as you wanted to tell her you met the man of your dreams in a random club at 3 a.m. or in the cafe on campus, you barely interacted with any men over there. “I went there to study, not to look for potential suitors. You know that,” you sighed, looking out the window at the familiar sights slowly beginning to appear. Looking back at her, you jokingly asked, “How about here? Have any cute guys decided to leave their exciting city lives and move to this shithole?” You instantly regretted asking that question. “Deadass? You know your mom’s friend from high school, right? Turns out she moved here with her son!” she smiled, looking at you like she’d just won the lottery.
You blinked. “Hold on. Ms. Ho? Are you serious? I thought they were going to live in the city forever.” Yunah nodded, stopping at the red light and turning to you. “I think we all thought that, but I heard she dragged her son back here to ‘slow down and be closer to family,’ you know, the usual.” Leaning back against the window, you groaned. “At least tell me they moved to the other side of town, please.” Yunah’s grin widened as she leaned in, clearly relishing the moment.
“They bought the house right across the street from yours.”
