AMBUCS Provides Mobility for Persons Who Are Disabled
Operating in New Mexico and West Texas, Standard Energy Services supplies gas and oil producers with a comprehensive set of services. Established in 2010 from a merger of six companies, Standard Energy Services provides its customers with well maintenance, pump trucks, vacuum trucks, and more. Standard E&S also donates to nonprofit organizations. One of these groups is AMBUCS, a national organization devoted to finding means of mobility and independence for persons who are disabled. AMBUCS donates AmTrykes, customized tricycles adapted to individuals' circumstances. Volunteers purchase these vehicles and give them mostly to children in need. Recently, East Carolina University students in physical therapy assembled 20 AmTrykes for distribution. Professors evaluated the childrens' disabilities and AMBUCS workers designed AmTrykes according to their specifications. For example, a child with limited leg function would receive an AmTryke propelled by his hands. Fundraising for the tricycles, which cost between $500 and $800, began after the designs were approved. Donors contributed more than $8,000, so families could receive the AmTrykes at no cost.
