Ammeter – A Complete Guide!
An Ammeter has a lot of uses in day-to-day life and is a very important electrical measuring instrument. This complete guide will help you understand what an ammeter is, how an Ammeter works, different types of ammeters, and more.
What is an Ammeter?
An ammeter is a measuring device that measures the flow of current in a circuit. It gives the exact reading of how much current passes through the conductor. Ammeter is derived from the Greek word ‘amps’ which means current.
When the circuit is at rest and current begins to flow, the ammeter immediately shows the current. Most ammeters have little or no electrical resistance and are simply connected in series of the circuit to be measured. Read more

What You Need to Know About Your Electric Meter
You are probably already familiar with your electric meter. It’s that device outside your home (typically installed where the power lines enter) that calculates the amount of electricity you consume on a monthly basis. The meter displays the total amount of power used in kilowatt-hours since it was installed. In order to find out how much energy was used within a given period of time, two readings must be taken with the first reading subtracted by the second. While the basics of your electric meter are fairly common knowledge, there are several things that most homeowners don’t know. We’ve compiled a list of essential facts to help you get better acquainted with this important component to your electrical system.
Types of Meters
There are two main types of electric meters, the more traditional Analog meter and the more modern Digital meter. Analog meters (also referred to as Electromechanical meters) use a process called electromagnetic induction to track the amount of electricity used. They display the amount on a series of clock-like scales that can be difficult to read without some guidance. Digital meters (also referred to as Smart meters) are much easier to read as the exact number shows up on an LCD or LED screen. Digital meters are also wireless, meaning that the reading can be done from a distance using a wireless device. Both types of meters can be used as time-of-use meters, which is a money-saving plan that tracks energy used during peak and off-hours.
Reading Your Electric Meter
Meter Number
Every electric meter is given a unique identification number to ensure the energy consumption of a home is billed properly. Each meter number can be found on the face of the meter. An analog meter has the number displayed toward the bottom while a digital meter displays the number just below the number screen.
Ownership
The utility company owns the electric meter. They are responsible for the installation, maintenance and monthly reading of energy usage. If for any reason you want to move it or have it replaced, you should contact your utility company directly. In Texas, if you have problems with your meter, you will need to call your retail electricity provider. Sometimes utility companies offer unique energy plans (including the previously mentioned time-of-use option), in which case a new or additional meter will need to be installed.

Lifespan
Analog meters have a typical lifespan of around 30 years, while the digital counterparts live about half as long. The digital meters also need to be serviced sporadically and while they are more efficient in tracking the data, they aren’t as dependable as their mechanical counterparts. There have also been complaints within the past decade by people dissatisfied with their digital meter who have requested the original analog designs.
Smart Meter Facts
Changing Energy Suppliers
Your meter doesn’t change even if you decide to switch energy suppliers. So you will keep the same meter you currently have installed regardless of what company you decide to use. Even in transition, your home’s power should not be interrupted at all.
Every electric meter has a base and yours might be outdated, in disrepair or not up to the city electrical code. If you are getting an electrical upgrade and your electric meter needs to be replaced, you might need a new base as well. If you need a new meter base for your meter, give Milestone a call today at 214-267-2405 (Dallas) or 817-267-2405 (Ft. Worth). We will set up an appointment and get a new one set up for you in no time.
