As an autistic woman who is anti eugenics and pro choice capitalism purposely devalues and dehumanizes disabled ppl that creates a social environment to promote aborting disabled fetuses because they refuse to contribute and conform to capitalist norms and in many cases cannot work a “normal job” and this is the primary function of pre natal tests for neurotypes such as Down syndrome. Most ppl with Down syndrome can and often do live rich fulfilling lives but the reason supports can be an obstacle is purely due to capitalist eugenics based policies that can prevent disabled families being given proper supports.
In fact, the true goal of hate groups such as Autism Speaks when they talk about “curing autism” isn’t removing the divergence from the individual, but actually creating and promoting the establishment of pre natal tests for autism in order to pressure would be parents into aborting the child in order to prevent more autistic ppl into being born as a means of genocide.
Abortion can and often is in some cases used for problematic and genocidal purposes (iirc hearing on a radio show years ago Iceland has no ppl with Down syndrome due to these pre natal tests as part of a genocide towards them) and this is why I don’t like the term “pro abortion” as many of those who identify with this term tend to repeat eugenics ideologies as a form of activism and I also acknowledge this can be an uncomfortable conversation for reproductive rights activists and leftists to have (and the latter group does have its own form of eugenics that have been used against disabled individuals when some countries had temporarily socialist governments) especially in an era where abortion access is being restricted in many countries (especially the USA).
But I also want to emphasize that the solution is obviously NOT to restrict abortion even further but rather de stigmatizing disabled ppl and debunking stereotypes towards them and making sure all disabled individuals have access to proper supports and care and stop the assumption that if one can’t “contribute” to society via capitalist modes or even the assumption that ppl HAVE to contribute to society in order to be seen as valuable or enough for the world.
