Happy Arbitrarily Chosen Day of No Real Cosmic Significance!
Just as there is no reason for the alphabet to be in the order it is in, there is no reason why this particular point in the Earth’s orbit around the Sun should be considered the end of one round and the beginning of the next. None at all. We as humans have divided up time and seasons into little boxes, and decided that the end of a “year” should fall on one of those particular boxes, when it is ultimately no different from any other box, or any other point in our planet’s orbit.
All of the feelings we have towards the new year are, objectively speaking, meaningless. There is no concrete reason why this particular date, above all others, should be a time of new beginnings, fresh outlooks, resolutions of change, and promises of self-betterment. There is no reason why all of these things could not happen on any other date--at any other point in the Earth’s orbit.
Our celebration of the new year is completely abstract, completely arbitrary, and completely human--and therefore, if you ask me, completely beautiful.
