NEW SONG - Outside My Reach
Outside My Reach is a song about realizing the difference between where I am as a musician and where I wish I could be. I was inspired to write it after watching a “how it’s made” video about Phoebe Bridgers’ Garden Song. It showed me how much work and how many resources go into making a song—from big studios to expensive equipment and expert producers. Watching that made me understand I might never have access to those things. But instead of feeling bad about it, I wanted to write a song that accepts that reality and still finds joy in making music with what I have.
In the song, I repeat the line “It is so obviously outside my reach, in a way I feel helplessly at ease.” This kind of repetition is called anaphora. It’s a way to emphasize a feeling and make the words stick with you. Martin Luther King Jr. used anaphora in his famous “I Have a Dream” speech by repeating the phrase “I have a dream” many times. While the messages are very different, the way we use repetition to create feeling and rhythm is similar—it gives the song the same kind of vibe.
