U&U Review:: Grayscale - “What We’re Missing”
By Katy Meininger
Album: What We’re Missing Artist: Grayscale Release Date: February 12th, 2016
If most of the pop punk bands in the scene today had a baby, you would find Grayscale. They’ve spent the past few years deciphering the unique sound they’ve managed to show off on this album. During my first listen to this, I really couldn’t believe that this was their debut full length album.
The album kicks in with a heavy riff on a song coincidentally called “Tense" that will start you off on a roller coaster of emotions throughout the entire album. If you’re already a fan, you’ve probably heard “Palette” which is next on the album. This song hits home real hard every time I hear it. It’s also got one of the tastiest melodies I’ve ever heard. Throughout the album you’ll hear those “familiar pop punk” chords, but don’t let them throw you off guard.
Further into the album they slow things down with a song called “Irish Curtains.” It’s by far my favorite song off of the album. It’s a very calm and collected melody that draws you in with the most captivating lyrics. The raw emotion that’s displayed in this song shows the potential they have.
Each song on this album tells a completely different story, varying member to member. The lyrical content conveys so many different emotions which is why I’ve fallen so in love with them. They don’t just stick to the status quo of the angsty lyrics. This is one of those albums where every single song on it leaves you wanting more. You’ll probably end up with one of these tasty melodies stuck in your head by the end of the album.
Grayscale definitely brings a little bit of everything to the table proving that they aren’t to be lumped in as "just another" pop punk band. You can pick up the album here.
