Christmas was always a challenge. It followed so closely after his birthday for one thing, but even if the holidays were separated, there would be another, greater problem: how could Aurora compete against what she had gifted him the previous year. Tristan had already proven long ago that he delighted in the shirts she sewed for him and the handkerchiefs that she embroidered such that, were he not to receive these gifts in a particular year, it would upset him; he’d proven that these gifts were just as treasured no matter how repetitive they were. Accordingly, there were boxes upon boxes filled with fresh shirts in crisp white, inky blacks, and various shades of blue. An army of new handkerchiefs, two for every day of the year, awaited unwrapping beside the tree. Yet it was his remaining gifts that had given her trouble until she’d had a stroke of brilliance.
Unfortunately, the delivery of the gift was problematic. Generally, Aurora hated the cold, but she almost always made an exception at Christmas for the aesthetics of it all. Yet, this year, her gift was too specific to allow her to indulge in creating the perfect Christmas ambiance. Really, there was no ambiance at all. Seeking out the warmth was tolerable, but spending the holiday in America, Texas of all places, was a difficult pill to swallow. She was certain that Tristan’s close monitoring of her lately had less to do with trying to guess at what his gift might be and more to do with trying to determine if she’d lost her mind. When Aurora ventured from the ranch they’d secured, she wondered if perhaps she had indeed gone mad. It would be worth it though. It would all be worth it once Tristan saw his gift.
Over their thousand years, she and Tristan had seen all sorts of new technologies. The most recent century had offered more innovations than most. One in particular intrigued her, and while she knew Tristan was selective in his embrace of modernity, she wanted to experience this, just once, and with him. She woke Tristan excitedly that morning, and had given him a blindfold to wear as she drove them to the nearby launch site. Aurora was giddy as she led Tristan to his seat and finally removed his blindfold to reveal the atrocity of modern technology surrounding them that was an unfortunate sight, but a necessary evil. “All of these mortals are starting to go and see the earth as few others have. Why should mortals have access to knowledge and sights that we have not seen?” Aurora explained. She reached for his hand then and kissed it. “Now when you compare me to the stars, you’ll have seen them up close." Aurora was grinning at him as the scientists moved around them in preparations for the launch. "Besides, once Lucien hears, no doubt he’ll devote his company to beating you to Mars and I can’t imagine anything that would please you more than if he moved to another planet.” her laugh was melodic and lit up her whole face as she teased him.
Christmas things! Blinded amid the American winter, his hand remained just as loyal to a cardinal cause. Vigilant for any shivering indication that could signal his sister's inquietude towards the weather. The maze her surprise guided them towards was strange and uncanny to the ears of an immortal. Mechanism chinked relentlessly in this era and the conciliatory breaths of machines were commonplace. And yet there was still to this place the novel murmurations of boundless gadgetry. As if visiting the open jaws of some metallic leviathan. The imagery proved itself mildly accurate once the scene was revealed.
What was-? Tristan listened to the explanation. And the sound of Aurora's laughter made him revive the shoots from a Polaroid camera. Photographs reaching the floor one after the other as the sound of her laughter played. The same melody that then transported him to human days, back when she sang the same joyful song one night under the starry night veil. The skies that seemed so unreachable back then and she was now gifting to them on a silver platter. For all of his apexes, Tristan decided there and then that there hadn't been nor there would ever be a single grain of time that wasn't grand, glorious and magnificent for as long as Aurora's laughter could play like that. "I love you." The lack of flourishes or attempts at describing the indescribable might have been the greatest prove of Rory's success at amazing him. An avid spark of increasing, distinguishable thrill raging in the excitement of their expedition. @ladamedemartel
