A Brief History in Boxes by Buckeye

For the past three years, I have collected boxes from presents. I never want the inside of the presents my mom receives but the box. It seemed harmless at first, I mean, who would not like being organised? But after a while, it got impractical. It was impractical to the point even I decided to stop myself from asking for the nice box my mom received.
It all started in the Christmas of 2012. My mom just moved to a new job and with her new job, people wanted to give her stuff. It usually came in the form of gift baskets with fruits or maybe the gift baskets you’d buy at the supermarket. But sometimes, it came in the form of a box. Sometimes, it was big enough to hold a cake inside it and freebies. Sometimes, it was small enough to place mooncakes in accordingly.
That year, I told myself I’d become more organised. Seeing the boxes pile up and just imagining all the DIYs (they were only a dream), I asked my mother if I could have them. She didn’t see the problem in it. I didn’t see the problem in it. From the clutter and piles of notebooks, they suddenly started disappearing into boxes. I soon compiled all of my merchandise into the biggest box I had. Placing all my books came into a treasure chest like container my mother received was next. All my art supplies went into another box. And suddenly, instead of the piles of clutter, I only saw box after box instead.
This has been a habit of mine ever since I noticed. When I got something new, I would never let it out of my sight. It was as valuable as gold to me. I could never sleep not knowing where it was. I saw that habit when I got a doll at age 8, I used to tuck it in at night before sleeping. I saw that habit at age 9, I received a Pokedex and never let it be touched my someone else. I still see it today.
And so when I got bored, I really saw the problem in my hoard of boxes. Only the boxes I truly liked were used and the others were left to rot. I soon gave them away after a pep talk to myself. Christmas of 2014, I decline when my mother asks if I wanted a box. I think I’m leaning more on the things that actually fill the boxes instead.
So the garbage truck always comes at 8 am on Wednesday, so I set my alarm for 7:15 to set out my trash. What time did they decide to come this morning? 7.
