White Noise
OK, I promised it, so it’s time to rant wax lyrical tell you all about another of my favourite webcomics. Probably my top, all-time favourite. White Noise.
It’s queer, it’s engrossing, it’s well-drawn, it’s cleverly drawn, and the world-building is incredible.
I should warn you: White Noise explores some dark themes. Slavery, genocide, and the trauma of living through that (and of knowing people who didn’t) all feature. That said, it’s not a bleak story, by any means. It’s a story of fighting back, of standing together, of forging new lives, of self-discovery. And it’s a story of people and places on the boundaries (which, let’s be frank, is where all the best stories are).
Adrien Lee’s careful layouts and juxtapositions do a really great job of enhancing the story, and drawing parallels. I find they only get better when revisited, and I like to read pages, and read the text descriptions, and read the comments, and read the pages again - and each time I find something I missed previously.
Also, the world-building is amazing! As with any well-told story, you only see the tip of the iceberg, but for those who (like me) can’t get enough of fictional worlds and what makes them tick, Adrien has a side blog (not updated recently, but with plenty of past material) called Tape Hiss.
