Also, yeah, whoever sold it to you as a new revolutionary original book did you a disservice. It borrows heavily from both old school fantasy and old school sci fi (particularly elements from Eddings and Heinlein (particularly Tie Enough for Love), who seem to be the go to's at the moment, Jim Butcher also borrowed heavily from both in Dresden and Codex Alera and I'm pretty sure Eragon's magic system was borrowed from Eddings too).
And like! I have nothing against people borrowing or referencing other books in their plot, characters, whatever. Ultimately, originality is in how you tell it, not the content, and everyone ever has done a nod to some other story in their own. But yeah, everyone who’s ever pitched these books to me (and there have been many) claimed Name of the Wind et al was, you know, this unique and wholly original series that was going to overturn the fantasy genre and..it ain’t that.
