Spectacled bears, also known as Andean bears, are the only bear species found in South America. These arboreal bears prefer to avoid conflict, using their sharp claws to climb the tallest trees and rest in platforms of sticks and leaves. This cub is also using its sharp claws to peel back the bark on a sapote tree to eat the nutritious second layer. Much of this vegetation is tough to open or digest for most animals, and the bear is one of the few species in its range to exlpoit these food sources.
