Hello! If I can ask, did you study illustration at an art college, or are you self-taught? Do you have any advice for aspiring illustrators?

I’ve been studying art… forever it feels like. Took after school classes in middle school, went to a magnet arts high school (and sometimes after school even then), and then majored in Illustration at Pratt Institute.

But I really learned here on Tumblr, which I guess is self taught? There are so many talented and kind illustrators on here, some of who I grew up admiring or creating alongside: @burdge, @may12324, @askingmarks, @tomatoeefaced, McKenna Harris, @brittanymyersart, @celestialteez, @bevsi, @andythelemon, @jovaline… the list goes on forever. I spent years taking tips and mimicking what they did hoping I’d one day be as good. And I think I’m pretty alright now, but it’s been a decades-long effort. And, the best part is it didn’t feel like an effort or practice—it’s just fun.

So my tip is: keep having fun. Make things you enjoy, other than what you think people will like. Don’t take the likes too seriously. Share like you would with friends, and keep some of it for yourself only.
