Artist Andrea Mary Marshall’s latest self portrait series, Not Vice/Versa, is a fashion campaign calling attention to the subjugation of women in FLDS polygamist communities. The Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is a Mormon denomination that practices plural marriage. Warren Jeffs, President and Prophet of the FLDS Church, is reported to have 78 wives. In 2011, Jeffs was charged with child abuse, incest and sentenced to life plus 20 years, yet his control over the church remains strong. Marshall states, “Before this project, my knowledge of the FLDS was limited to prairie dresses and braided hairstyles worn by women of the community. While these women face injustice beyond the confines of modest dress, fashion has the power to reach the masses, shape culture and influence positive social change.
