“If you keep staring at the ceiling, the paint is actually going to start talking back to you," Samuel said, his voice echoing slightly in the tiled hallway.
The school’s ventilation system was humming a low, rhythmic drone that seemed to vibrate in the marrow of your bones, Most students avoided this particular wing of the building because the linoleum was perpetually sticky and the lockers smelled of ancient gym socks, but it was the only place where the noise of the social hierarchy faded into a dull hum. You shifted your weight, glancing at the way the fluorescent lights flickered in a sequence that felt almost like a code. It was the kind of silence that felt heavy, the sort of void where a single loud laugh could shatter the entire atmosphere of the afternoon.
"Anyway," Samuel continued, his tone shifting from the usual mocking edge to something suspiciously soft, "my parents are out of town for the weekend. The rest of the guys are coming over for a pool party to celebrate the fact that we survived the first week of senior year. You should come."
You blinked, your gaze finally dropping from the ceiling to meet his. Samuel wasn't exactly the type to be too kind to you; usually, your relationship consisted of him stealing your pens or making commentary on your "tragically" organized planner. But there he was, leaning against a locker with an expression that wasn't a smirk for once. He looked almost nervous, his fingers drumming a restless beat against the metal. The invitation felt less like a summon and more like a genuine gesture, a rare crack in the armor he wore to maintain his status as one of the school's little popular kids.
The party didn't start super packed, but with the rhythmic, muffled thumping of a bassline that seemed to vibrate through the soles of your shoes long before you stepped through the front door. Samuel’s house was a sprawling piece of modern architecture that felt more like a gallery than a home, all glass walls and white marble that made you feel like you were trespassing in a museum. The backyard was a sea of neon lights and floating foam cups, the pool shimmering like a liquid sapphire under the midnight sky. For the first hour, you played the part of the observer, leaning against a pillar and watching Andrew, Junmyeong, Anderson, and Ryan command the space with an effortless, high powered magnetism that drew everyone in.
Samuel, surprisingly, didn't let you fade into the background. He spent the evening orbiting around you, his usual teasing replaced by a strange, protective attentiveness. He brought you drinks, laughed at your jokes before you even finished them, and kept a steady hand on the small of your back whenever the crowd surged too close. It was a dizzying shift in gravity. By the time you reached your third cup of something neon blue and sugary, the world began to soften at the edges. The music stopped being noise and started feeling like a physical weight, pressing you closer to Samuel as you leaned into him, your head resting against his shoulder while you rambled about the absurdity of senior year. “I mean all the assignments he gave were bulllll- bullshit” you say slurring your words and pionting at Andrew like he was the teacher that gave you the work “ first time seeing “L/N , Y/N hammerd” Andrew laughed at your druken antics “im gonna get this one to bed i’ll be back in no time” he said swinging you over his shoulder “PARTYS NEVER OVER PEOPLE” you yelled flopping on to him as he throw you over his shoulder and carried you inside the house.
The transition from the neon chaos of the pool to the quiet of the upstairs hallway was a blur of fragmented images the cold splash of water on your face, Samuel’s low laugh in your ear, and the feeling of your feet barely touching the ground. He had carried you away from the party, his arm draped securely over your waist to keep you upright. The air in the house was cooler, smelling of expensive candles and linen, a sharp contrast to the humid, chlorine scented air of the backyard. By the time he pushed open the heavy oak door to his bedroom and eased you onto the edge of the bed, the room was spinning in a slow, lazy circle. You looked up at him, his face illuminated by the soft glow of a bedside lamp, and realized he wasn't smirking. He looked worried, his brows knit together as he searched for a glass of water on the nightstand.
The water Samuel handed you felt like ice against your palms, but your coordination was a shot you missed your mouth by a fraction of an inch, splashing a few drops down your chin. You let out a soft, humming giggle, the sound feeling far too loud in the sudden stillness of the room. Samuel didn't roll his eyes or make a comment about your lack of motor skills. Instead, he reached out with a warm thumb to wipe the stray droplet from your lip, his touch lingering longer than necessary. The movement was slow, deliberate, and it sent a spark through the haze of the alcohol that felt more potent than any drink you'd had all night.
"You're a disaster, Y/N," he murmured, though the words lacked any bite. He sat down beside you on the mattress, the weight of him causing the bed to dip and tilting you slightly toward him.
The room continued to tilt, but this time it felt like the world was leaning in to get a better look at the two of you. You looked at him really looked at him and noticed how the lamplight caught the gold in his eyes, making them look softer than you’d ever seen them in the harsh glare of the school hallways. The distance between you had shrunk until you could feel the heat radiating off his skin, a steady warmth that anchored you amidst the swirling dizziness. You felt a sudden, inexplicable urge to be even closer, as if the few inches of air remaining between you were a vast canyon you needed to cross.
"I'm not a disaster," you whispered, your voice sounding small and fuzzy in your own ears. You reached out, your fingers grazing the fabric of his shirt, pulling him just a fraction closer. "You're just... annoyingly loud. Even when you're being quiet." You said shaking your hand trying to sit up right and form a sentence all at once
Samuel let out a short, breathy laugh, the sound vibrating in the small space between you. He didn't pull away; instead, he leaned in, his forehead almost resting against yours. The protective wall he usually kept between himself and the rest of the world had completely crumbled, leaving behind something raw and quiet. "I'm not loud," he whispered back, his voice dropping an octave. "You're just finally listening."
The alcohol had turned your thoughts into slow moving syrup, making everything feel heavy and golden. You looked at his lips, then back to his eyes, feeling a magnetic pull that felt more real than the floor beneath your feet. Without thinking, you shifted, your hand sliding from his shirt to the back of his neck, your fingers tangling in the short hairs there. The world stopped spinning and suddenly narrowed down to a single point of focus: the way his breath hitched and the way his pupils dilated as he looked at you.
You didn't wait for him to bridge the remaining distance the impulse was too strong, a sudden surge of bravery fueled by the neon blue drink and the way he was looking at you. You leaned forward, closing the gap in one clumsy, sweeping motion. The kiss was tentative at first, tasting faintly of the sugary drink and something uniquely Samuel something like clean linen and a hint of the outdoor air. For a heartbeat, you expected him to laugh, to push you away with a joke about your lack of balance, or to tell you that you were too drunk to know what you were doing.
Instead, Samuel made a low sound in the back of his throat halfway between a sigh and a groan and his hand slid from your waist to the nape of your neck, pulling you flush against him. The shift was instantaneous. The tentative nature of the kiss vanished, replaced by a sudden, hungry intensity that made your toes curl against the carpet. It wasn't the polished, effortless confidence he displayed in the school hallways; this was desperate and searching, as if he had been holding his breath for three years and had finally found a way to breathe.
"Partys missing you sam" Andrew shouted loud enough to hear through the door but apparently not loud enough for you and samuel to hear him as the door open he spoke “you know i was thinking we could all get wings after this like old times with y/n and-“ he paused the door fully opened “oh fuck” he said putting his hand over his mouth and closing the door hoping he didn’t interrupt something too intimate. “Go away there having a moment” he said shooing away the other boys that were being nosy at the door.
The sudden sound of the door clicking shut left a heavy, expectant silence in the room, though the heat between you and Samuel hadn’t dissipated. He didn't pull away immediately instead, he rested his forehead against yours, his chest heaving in a rhythm that mirrored your own. The alcohol was still humming in your veins, but the fog had shifted, transforming from a blur of confusion into a sharp, electric clarity. He looked at you with an expression that was almost pained, as if he were trying to memorize the exact way you were looking at him before the real world rushed back in.
