In the UK 7 women die a month, but 2 men also die. So shall we just continue to ignore men being abused? Feminism is about equality for all - I don't see ignoring one type of abuse as equality. Violence is violence.
Hiya, thanks for the ask. Right, so, like I said in my post, I don’t think it’s okay for anyone to abuse anyone else, but there is a tendency for “men’s rights activists” to play the victim card when the reality is that we live in a society where being born a man is like spawning in a video game with extra lives. I get my back up because women live in a place of fundamental inequality and then when we start talking about domestic violence or sexual assault or reproductive rights, you have the “men’s rights” dudebros over there whining about how we’re talking about someone else’s problems for ten seconds. 83% of all police-reported domestic assaults in Canada (my stats are Canadian because I am) are against women. And as I said in my earlier post, the abuse is worse - three times as many women as men experience choking, beating, being threatened with a deadly weapon, and sexual violence, and they are more likely to be physically injured, to get a restraining order, and to fear for their lives.
If 83% of drunk drivers were young people, you’d target your anti-drunk driving ads at young people. Saying “older people drive drunk too, you know!” is true, but a bit reductive. That’s not the best analogy, but that’s because gender is tricky. For example, my magical invented 83% of drunk drivers haven’t, as a group, been marginalized and historically shunted aside and ignored at every opportunity, and they don’t live in a society where they continue to be at an automatic disadvantage.
I felt I should add this as well: According to the research (check the same site I linked earlier for the source), men tend to under-report their own violent tendencies and over-report their partner’s, while women tend to over-report their own violent tendencies and under-report their partners. This partially explains why reported domestic violence against men seems high. Additionally, men are much more likely to initiate violence while women are much more likely to use it in self defense.
