I have read "To His Coy Mistress" and "The Definition of Love" long before this book, so those two were re-readings. The longest poem in the collection is "#UponAppletonHouse", about the features and history of an estate, consisting of 97 octaves and various episodes, some of which are full of Biblical and historical references, the meanings of which the reader should know better to understand the poem better. Marvell is famous for being a Metaphysical poet and therefore used extended metaphors and "conceits", comparing two unlike things in a skillful, clever way in his poetry. His usage of imagery is also excellent. Unrequited love, the inevitability of death and shortness of life, "carpe diem" idea, and soul vs. body are a recurrent themes in Marvell's poetry, as well as nature and pastoral elements. Some of the dialogic/dramatic poems, where the two parts of one body are in clash with each other, like "soul/mind" against "pleasure/body", recall the turmoil of the English Civil War, as well as the direct allusions to the war and Oliver Cromwell in some of the other poems. A Dialogue between the Soul and Body

SOUL O, who shall from this dungeon raise A soul, enslaved so many ways, With bolts of bones, that fettered stands In feet, and manacled hands. BODY O, who shall deliver me whole, From bonds of this tyrannic soul, Which,stretched upright, impales me so, That mine own precipice I go; And warms and moves this needless frame (A fever could but do the same), And, wanting where its spite to try, Has made me live to let me die, A body that could never rest, Since this ill spirit it possessed?

SOUL What magic could me thus confine Within another’s grief to pine, Where, whatsoever it complain, I feel, that cannot feel, the pain, And all my care itself employs, That to preserve, which me destroys: Constrained not only to endure Diseases, but, what’s worse, the cure: And ready oft the port to gain, Am shipwrecked into health again?

olsaydı eğer yeterince yerimiz ve biraz zamanımız işte belki o zaman, sevgili hanımefendi, çekilirdi nazınız oturur düşünürdük, ne yapıp ne etsek de uzun aşk günlerini hoşça geçirsek diye. sen hindistan’da, ganj kıyısında yakutlar bulurdun, bense akıntısında humber nehrinin, yakınırdım senden gündüz gece. seviyor olurdum seni tufan’dan on yıl önce ve sen - eğer lütfedersen – reddederdin yahudiler ikna olup dinden dönene değin. aşkım bir bitki gibi büyür yayılırdı imparatorluklar bile yanında ufak kalırdı gözlerine övgüler düzmek alırdı yüzyılımı ve tabii seyredeceğim o muhteşem alnını iki yüzyıl sürerdi tapmak göğüslere tek tek gerisi içinse tam otuz bin yıl gerek. en az yüzyıl vermeli her uzvuna ayrı ayrı ancak sonuncusunda açılmalı kalbinin sırrı çünkü, sevgili bayan, sizin hakkınız budur zaten ben de başka türlü sevemezdim, doğrudur.

ama bir ses var ki, hep duyuyorum ardımda zaman üstümüze geliyor kanatlı arabasında ve ondan sonra her şeyin ötesinde serilip yatan sonsuzluğun uçsuz bucaksız çölleri olacak inan ne bir eser kalacak güzelliğinden ne de var gücümle seslenirken ben duyacaksın mermerlerin altında yankılanan sesimi solucanlar kemirecek onca sakındığın bekaretini. bir avuç toz olacak erdem dediğin şeyler benim arzum durur mu, o da kül olur gider mezar özel mülkündür, yalnız kalabilirsin ama orada kimse sana sarılır mı hiç dersin?

işte o zaman, henüz gençliğin rengi ışıyorken teninde çiğ taneleri gibi ve hala fışkırıyorken istekli ruhun sabırsız bir ateşle bütün hücrelerinden vücudunun işte o zaman bırak gönlümüzce davranalım ve bir çift sevdalı şahin olalım onlar gibi yutalım bir lokmada vaktimizi beklemeyelim onun yavaş yavaş tüketmesini bizi. gel bütün gücümüzü, bütün güzelliğimizi yuvarlayalım seninle ve topa tutup hayatın çelik kapılarını geçirelim sevgimizi öteye. böylece durduramasak da güneşi gökte bırakırız koşsun bizimle birlikte.. -Andrew Marvell
