‘Gavin.’ ‘Hmm-Hmm?’ ‘You do know I have to get to work, right?’ Gavin opened his eyes slowly, unwilling to face reality just yet. He smiled at Richard lying next to him, head perched on his hand and hair messy from sleep. The human returned the smile and gently brushed along Gavin’s cheekbone, hovering long enough before the touch to give Gavin the chance to duck away. As if the android wanted that. Nines’ contact had soon become a treasured sensation he couldn’t get enough of. But the gesture itself was something Gavin admired deeply. The human never took what he needed but asked and offered. ‘I know’, the android grumbled with regret. ‘But does it have to be now?’ Richard laughed. ‘Yes, actually. I’m already late. Don’t get me wrong if I was in charge, I would stay in our little world of blankets forever. Come on. Let me go get ready. We can continue in the evening, alright?’ ‘Fine’, Gavin complained, but threw him a cheeky grin afterwards. ‘I’ll hold you to it.’
He watched the man get dressed admiring his toned muscles and dotted skin maybe a little too much. Well, he was well beyond embarrassment or self-consciousness. ‘Stay safe’, he said, as his eyes fell on the surprisingly only scar the man had. An old gunshot wound that had led to severe complications in the hospital. ‘Okay?’ Richard pulled his shirt over it and turned around while buttoning it up. ‘I’ll try my best Gavin. Will you be okay?’ ‘Yeah, you know me, will spend the entire day catching up on your old series. Nah, I’ll be fine.’ Nines nodded, eyes lingering a moment too long on the android. ‘Didn’t you say you were late for work?’ ‘Oh, fuck. Yes.’
Gavin laughed as the man practically jumped into his pants and ran out of the door, trying to put on his socks on the way. The low thud from outside told Gavin he wasn’t too successful. ‘What a chaos human’, the android mumbled, standing up to at least check on him. Nines just threw him a lopsided grin, got back up and left for the door. Gavin watched him speed off from the driveway with screeching tires and shook his head once again. How did the man ever make it Detective?
-
Truth was Gavin never switched on the television and rather sat on the couch looking at the different framed puzzles on the wall Richard had completed. The touch from minutes ago still lingered on his cheek, the ghost of the man’s affection. More and more often lately, Gavin thought about their talk weeks ago. We are in beta phase now. He had never seen the human happier as in that moment. What made him think once again about how much the man had gifted him with and how little he had received in return. Yes, it wasn’t a competition and Richard had reassured him time and time again that he had everything he needed and was happy. But still Gavin wanted to give him something. But what could he possibly do? Buy him another puzzle, was his first thought, but he disregarded that. He could do that later, he wanted something special. Something that showed the human what Gavin couldn’t tell him himself. Something both of them would enjoy and would but Gavin’s mind at ease. That already excluded everything that involved crowds of people. And to be honest, the android still didn’t know much about the man. He knew what he liked to do to pass time, he knew he enjoyed their mornings and evenings spent in bed and he knew his favourite food. He knew every small gesture and habit of his and how to interpret it. But what the man did for fun outside their home, he had no clue about.
Maybe if he could… Gavin eyed the phone sitting on the coffee table. Should he? He didn’t actually want to do it, but there was no other way, was there? So, he took the phone and called the right number. ‘Hello?’ ‘Connor?’ ‘Yes?’ ‘This is G-G-Gavin’, he started. ‘I neeeed your he-he-help with something.’ ‘Sure thing. Does it involve Richard?’ ‘Yes’, the android nodded. ‘In a way at least.’ ‘Is he okay?’ ‘Yes! Y-y-yes he’s aaaalright. I’m just… What does he d-d-do for fun?’ ‘For fun?’ Connor grew silent. ‘Oof, that’s a tough one. He likes watching series and movies. Likes puzzles way too much. He likes practically anything that’s warm and fluffy…’ ‘And wh-what about outsiiide the house?’
‘You looking for a place to go on a date?’, Connor asked after staying silent for a while. ‘Wh-wh-what? Nooo, of co-c-course not.’ ‘Really?’ ‘Okay, I th-th-th- He does so muuuch for me. Wanted to taaake him somewheeere h-h-he enjoys.’ He heard laughter from the other side. ‘Hey, no need to get flustered about. He really likes aquariums. But be warned, if you take him there, he will have a hard time concentrating on you.’ Gavin thought about it. That wasn’t actually such a big downer. He wanted to do this for Richard after all. ‘Th-th-thanks Connor. That heeelped.’ ‘Hey, ask me anytime. Have fun on your dat-‘ Gavin cut the line.

Richard laid wide awake in his bad. In his still unfamiliar bed in a foreign apartment in a city he was just starting to discover anew. Sometimes childhood memories rose up when he walked past a familiar corner, but really familiar he was only with his way to the DPD and back. His official transfer over from Chicago had been only a week ago and he still had problems accommodating to the new environment having spent more or less his whole life over. It helped that his brother had stayed in Detroit and could help him get started.
But the unfamiliarity wasn’t what kept him up this night. He looked over to his alarm clock and groaned. It was well past midnight and he had to get up early the next day. What asshole was outside at this hour and made such a ruckus. He had heard several neighbours scream from their windows already, followed by a few minutes of blissful silence. But as soon as Richard was about to fall asleep it started anew. Again, the sound of something out of metal crushing down ripped him from his half-sleep. The man sighed defeated. He couldn’t sleep anyway, so he could as well get up and silence whatever scavenger was out there in the scrapyard. He quickly pulled on a jacket and some baggy gym-pants over his pyjamas and fetched his badge and pistol from the nightstand together with a flashlight.
He walked out into the hallway, the automated lights flicking on, some of them shutting down as soon as they had come to life. God, this apartment complex was just about as run down as the whole neighbourhood. As soon as he had gathered enough money he would get out of here. Richard pulled the door shut and locked it carefully, before hurrying down the stairs to the ground level. Oh yes, whoever was down there would meet his anger of loosing a good night’s sleep. And maybe a bit more just for good measure.
He stopped outside in front of the chain-link fence and let his flashlight flit over it in search for an entrance. There was a gate, but it was closed. Of course. There was another noise coming from the scrapyard like of some big piece of corrugated metal gliding off a hill. Fuck it. No one was on the street and the sonly surveillance cam was trained on the area of the gate farther down. Who would know he was trespassing if no one saw it? He climbed the fence and dropped on the other side, rubbing his hands together. He ran for the noise, keeping his head down in case whoever was over there had a loose trigger-finger.
He skidded to a halt in front of an old car and spied over the hood, one hand on his pistol. The first thing he saw was a red light, then his eyes focussed on the figure and he saw the shadow of a person – an android – digging in a pile of junk, jumping back as the whole thing collapsed. The android held his head at that and looked around frantically. Instantly Richard had his head down again, deciding now was as good of a time as any.
‘Freeze, Detroit police!’, he shouted, jumping out of cover. ‘State your name, model number and reason to be here and disturb everyone’s fucking sleep!’ ‘No, please!’ The android pulled up his arms in defence, showing him both of his empty hands. ‘Don’t shoot! Don’t-‘ ‘State your damn name and model number!’ Richard kept his pistol up. Even an unarmed android could be a dangerous opponent. ‘G-Gavin! GV200! Please don’t shoot! I- I-‘ The android actually fell to his knees. ‘Don’t hurt me, please.’ Well, that was something different. Richard let his hand sink but held on to his pistol in the holster. ‘Calm down, Gavin. See: I won’t shoot. What are you doing here?’ ‘They- they told me to- to stay here! But then they told me to go and never come back here. I- If they find me…’ ‘They? Who do you mean?’ ‘They… they drove me here, then left me and drove away telling me I should wait here until they got back… And others… they found me here and told me to go. But I can’t, you see? And they said they would hurt me would they ever see me again. I have to hide. But I can’t hide because what if they come back and…’ ‘Are you deviant?’, Richard said calm, beginning to understand what was happening. ‘Deviant?’ The android looked up to him, LED still a deep red. ‘No.’ ‘Okay. Your owners, the people who dropped you here… When was that?’ ‘Three months ago.’ ‘Okay, I need you to listen to me: They are not coming back for you.’ ‘What? Of course, they are! They promised!’ ‘Gavin.’ Richard crouched down in front of the android. The cold of the night started to seep under his jacket. ‘Look around. You are in a scrapyard. Why should they leave you here if they still wanted you? Maybe they were afraid because of what happened during the revolution, remember?’ ‘No! I was family! They wouldn’t leave me!’ The android suddenly stood, pushing Richard back to the ground. The human immediately had his gun back trained on the android in case he would try anything more. But he just held his head, walking up and down. Richard got back up at a crawl not to startle the android. He wondered whether a LED could become even redder than now.
Then suddenly the pacing stopped, and Gavin slowly let his hands fall down turning around and eying the scrapyard. ‘You are right. It doesn’t make sense. But they… why would they leave me? I never did anything…’ ‘Sometimes people get scared and do irrational things’, Richard tried to supply. ‘What will you do now?’, Gavin asked LED now circling yellow. ‘I am trespassing technically.’ ‘To be honest, I just wanted to scare the idiot that was responsible for disturbing my sleep. I’m technically trespassing too. I’ll go back and try to get at least a few hours of sleep. What will you do?’ ‘I… I don’t know. If I stay here they will most likely add me to their inventory the violent way. But… I don’t really…’ ‘You know, you could stay with me? I’m living up there.’ He pointed up to his window and asked himself why he suddenly invited an android to his flat. What was wrong with him? He didn’t know the thing. Richard blamed it on his sleep-deprived state. ‘You could watch the yard from there safely. Y’know, in case they do come back.’
‘Thank you. That actually… sounds perfect. Oh, and if they come back… These phckers are gonna have to explain a lot!’
039. Shouldn’t you be with him/her?
This one is a bit longer than my normal, just a headsup! (Finally not only emotions but story XD)

‘Oh, no, I won’t be ordered around, Detective!’ ‘You- Wait, when did I order you around, Gavin? I just asked you to come with me.’ ‘Exactly.’ ‘Gavin, we are partners, we are supposed to go to missions together!’ ‘Yeah, well, I never asked for a phcking partner! Let alone a damn human. And I’m not becoming someone’s puppet!’ ‘I-I am not trying to make you one, we just have to go. We have been called as backup for the SWAT, me being a former military and you being a state of the art android.’ ‘You have been called out to duty.’ ‘It is implied I take my partner with me.’ ‘Oh and now I'm your property, yes? I imply you should go phck yourself! I’m not following you around like a damn lapdog!’ ‘Fine! I’ll go alone then, partner!’
Gavin watched the human march off. Honestly, he had expected him to hoist him up and pull him with him. Or to complain to the captain resulting in god knows what for the GV200. Or to punish him in any other way. He hadn’t at all expected the man to simply walk away. But then again, Nines wasn’t like other partners he had had. It would be too much to say the man had left him alone and in peace, but he had always ordered him in a polite way, even if it was an order nonetheless. Well, he wouldn’t feel guilty about it. The human had worked alone the whole time. In his file it said he had one or two partners in his career. One in the military that died the first week, one in the beginning of his police-life. Well, they lived to tell the tale, but it wasn’t a pleasant one for sure. Gavin had heard the stories about the uncontrollable Detective that, well, every definition of asshole and self-entitled idiot fit. Nines had been over five years at the force without a partner, he would manage.
GV200 spent the time until the human would get back attending to the menial work no one wanted to do. The android tasks, the ones left for them to complete by the humans. Gavin hated it. He had a whole life of signing papers for his partners, writing reports, filing evidence, sending samples to the lab, waiting for results. He didn’t realise how the hours passed and he wouldn’t have noticed the ruckus in the bullpen weren’t it for a few sheets of paper he had to fetch from the printer.
‘Hey, shouldn’t you be with him?’, someone asked as he passed by and Gavin didn’t spent time looking at them, when his auditory sensors picked up that voice coming out of the headphones somewhere. ‘This is Detective Richard Stern, requesting immediate backup! The perimeter has been overrun, I’m in enemy territory, cut off from the SWAT team. Status-‘ The man held his breath and far-away voices became audible. Then hushed words: ‘I haven’t been spotted yet. I have to keep quiet.’
Gavin ignored the lingering stares at him and the muttered questions why he wasn’t there. He asked himself the same questions.

part1
Night after night he stood at the window, picking up the debris the red walls had left behind as they shattered. They had left him behind. These phcking assholes had called him family, then left him in this very scrapyard to rot. And he had been idiotic enough to be loyal, to really think they would come back. God, how dumb could one be? Believe in a promise given by their kind. 'Phcking humans', he muttered disturbing the silence and quickly shutting himself with a cautious look towards the sleeping detective. Well, he guessed he wasn't that bad when he thought about it. Although the man had been unusually fast inviting him into his home. Did he pity him? Was human empathy that strong of an emotion to invite a complete stranger to live with him?
Well, mostly he lived here alone now. The human wasn't there often, seemingly work being his second home. They hadn't talked much, mostly trivial questions, nothing too deep, nothing that was really of worth. Was this human just this disclosed or was he too wary of him? Gavin had learned he was a detective for the DPD, had only recently moved over and that he had a brother working there too. And that his favourite food seemed to be instant noodles judging from the stack of empty cups on the counter he hadn't thrown away yet. Though the man did say he could cook he did so very rarely. In the time Gavin had stayed here now, Richard had cooked only once and that was just because he had failed to restock in fast food.
Hobbies of any kind he had yet to discover, too. There were a few books, mostly detective stories and a few thrillers. But he had never seen Richard read any. Usually he came back from work, ate something, took care of his bodily needs, watched some TV and fell dead into his bed. Needless to say Gavin was bored quite soon. Down in the scrapyard he had to stay hidden but always look out for someone coming for him. Also, boredom wasn't something a machine experienced. Now he had no task except looking down from the window, waiting for someone who would never come and who he never wanted to see again.
He pushed himself off the windowsill to go investigate the flat more. He didn’t expect to find much more evidence of the human’s missing personality, but well, he just wanted to leave that window for once. There was a calendar hung up on the wall depicting a bunch of kittens sleeping on top of each other. Did Richard like cats? Gavin stared at the picture and thumbed through the other months. He decided he liked cats very much. He was to go over to the shelf to pick up a random book as his eyes fell on a tablet that had not been there before. Curiously he went over, picking it up and turning it on. The screen lit up and showed him pictures of dead bodies. Right. Police detective. He scrolled past them, soon realising these were belonging to an ongoing investigation. Why did Richard have these laying around in his flat? Wasn’t he working enough at the precinct already?
