Data was gathered from Wikipedia articles. The specific articles are referenced in the image. The support lifetime of a given device is taken to be the period from the device's launch to the release date of the first OS version (API level for Android) it does not officially support.

The data shows that iPhones receive software upgrades for much longer than Nexus devices (and by extension, other Android devices in general). On average, an iPhone will receive the most recent OS version for around 20 months more than a Nexus device.

Did the Galaxy S6 Edge just beat the Nexus 6 to an Android update?

The Galaxy S6 Edge is one of the best Android phones we’ve ever had the pleasure of using. As such, it gets a lot of attention: in the street, in the market place and also in the developer departments of Samsung. The same is true of the carriers that stock it. This is why it looks like the Galaxy S6 Edge Android 5.1.1 update just made it to T-Mobile customers before even the Nexus 6 has it. Here’s what we know about the Galaxy S6 Edge update.

Guest Mode returns

The Galaxy S6 Edge fortunately shipped with silent mode out of the box, but a feature that didn’t make the cut was Guest Mode. Thankfully, the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update has delivered that feature to the Galaxy S6 Edge. A developer by the name of Eduardo Mera (Sunderwear) on XDA Developers posted the following video and image that seems to show a build of Android 5.1.1 compiled on April 28. We can’t confirm it is legitimate, but if so, it means the T-Mobile Galaxy S6 Edge got 5.1.1 before even the T-Mobile Nexus 6.

So far it looks like only the T-Mobile Galaxy S6 Edge that has received Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. We’ll keep our ears peeled for other carriers updates, but we’re not expecting anyone else to deliver quite this quickly. Still, as the video above seems to prove, the 5.1.1 build is legit. Stay tuned for more.
