New #AndyEverson prints have arrived! #NativeArt #BAM! LOL...I'm such a fool. (at Ruby Creek Art Gallery)
No Pipelines! Silkscreen 2012 Andy Everson K’ómoks First Nation Andyeverson.com This is by far my favourite Everson print to date. It is such a clear and striking image, that every time I see it, it resonates within me at a level of pure truth. I love his use of form lines in and above the skull. To me this piece says it all, it's not just a matter of protecting the environment, it's a matter of life vs death, health vs sickness, and the choices for action made around that.
More Andy, This is a fantastic video interview with Andy Everson speaking about his art. And offers some amazing shots of his works.
Andy Everson K’ómoks First Nation. Andyeverson.com Clockwise from top left ‘Money’, ‘Power’, ‘Control’ and Andy Everson in his interpretation of a representation of modern day warrior.
I think it was an interesting choice of Andy’s to utilize familiar pop culture icons, and themes while transforming them with his own unique art, and further still connecting them to his nation’s stories and histories. Especially in a time where there is often so much talk about cultural appropriation, I think this is less an offence when an artist uses popular culture/art as a springboard for new creations versus corporations ect appropriating art, clothing ect from a nations culture, and taking the cultural significances out of context, and at times outright abusing them, and their sacredness, such as with the ‘hipster headdress’ explosion.
I also think it’s interesting that Andy has connected with these cultural icons that all have masks, where in his own nation’s culture masks have their own sacred and powerful roles.
Each print on his website comes with a story, and they are well worth the read.
The three prints above are all from 2012
