Hey, Everyone! Last night marked the final class of the first summer season for the joyous "When the Music Played the Band: (Re)Discovering the Grateful Dead" at the Neighborhood Music School. We ended this wild six week cultural escapade by moving through the years 1981-1995, exploring the beautiful - and prescient - backcountry Hunter-Garcia end-of-life hymn "Black Muddy River". While this past week's Google Drive material experienced the Dead set against the backdrop of Reagan Era politics, day-glo pop culture, and later Grunge, the song and the band itself stood - and still persist - as a testament to our inherent abilities and right to create sublime beauty, achieving a perfect elegy in marking that which we know we must say goodbye to, having loved it so well.
