There weren't many chances for a demigod to get out of Camp Half Blood without immense amounts of danger, and the fact that she was out at all meant that things were (mostly) safe for the moment. Things were never safe for a demigod. They never would be. There was always going to be another monster, another death, another reason why they'd never, ever be safe.
But for now, it was nearing September, and Jaylin was visiting her father in New York City, where he was for a convention. She used to love going to those conventions with him, going back and forth between the different tables of herbs and spices, smelling things, learning their purposes.
This time, she'd stayed behind. Since the day she'd turned eleven, she'd got used to the fact that there were going to be occasional strange happenings around her. Now, at fourteen, she knew what those strange happenings were (monsters, usually) and how to fight them. But she'd been at camp all summer, and she didn't want to take the chance of getting her father killed on the only day she'd been able to visit him. So while her father was at the convention, she was visiting a little coffee shop, trying to decide which to try first.
"Can I get a ..."Hecate's daughter squinted at the menu. She sighed, frustrated with her dyslexia before she simply decided to go with the idea she'd had in her head. "Chai latte, shot of espresso?"
The demigod felt someone standing behind her and turned, offering a shrug in apology. "Sorry. I didn't mean to take so long. I like your tattoos. I've been thinking about getting another one of my own."
