Description

The subject is taken from Ariosto’s epic poem, Orlando Furioso (1516). Angelica, placed in the care of the Duke of Bavaria, was pursued by the Christian knight Orlando. She escapes and eventually falls in love with Medaro the Moor. They marry and spend an idyllic honeymoon in the woods. Here, Wootton shows Medaro carving the lovers’ names into a tree.
