Let’s read some books

I never really got a routine on how to prepare readings something they dont really teach you in french universities. Anyways, this year i started to pay more attention to that, so here’s how i try to prepare myself, so i thought i would share.

Any addition, comment, or criticism is welcome, as this is just an attempt at building a routine :)

Title

Pay attention to the title before and after the reading

What can you expect the story / themes to be from it ?

Does the expectation hold up during the reading ?

Genre and movement:

To which genre/movement does the work you’re dealing with belong to?

What can you expect from it ? (Topos, clichés, etc)

 Which elements of the story/work are specific to this genre/movement ?

Which defy your expectation, and how ?

Themes:

What themes does this work bring up ? How ?

Construction:

How many part are there in this work? Where are its turning points ?

Okay, that’s all I have for today, this routine can potentially be applied to most media analysis work, even though I’m more focussed on literary works, because that's what i study.

I basically spent all day doing grammar exercises and trying to draft my essay for Integrated Language Skills I. University is exhausting but tomorrow I‘m gonna have sushi with my dad and read The Tempest so stay tuned for updates on that!

today i’ll finally get the results for my “english I” language class. tbh with y’all, i’m really excited, especially because there’s up to 70 applications for classes like this, although the class only fits about 25 people. it’s also enormously important for the whole of my bachelors degree.

later today we will have the official freshmen welcoming by our mayor with music and prayers and all the german stuff you can imagine in an event as big as this. we also get our infamous “erstitüten” which are basically goodie bags with all kinds of stuff for the freshmen. upper classmen come to the event just to get one for themselves.

after all of that ends i’ll probably go to a pub crawl organized by the education department, one of the biggest departments in my university. my department is also up there because it overlaps with the education department, i have most of my classes together with future english teachers and businesswo/men.

in my major though, there are actually less than 40 people. i’ve seen less than 20 of them up until now, but they all seem like really nice people. i’m actually relieved that i will never get used by my teacher as a substitute again. i enjoy being average. everyone is just like me, speaks english just as good as me and is interested in the same stuff as me. i found my crowd.

does anyone know a chrome extension or app with a phonetic keyboard so i can basically type with the IPA? or even just something i can open up in or next to my browser that shows the entire alphabet at once so i can just copy/paste out of there?? an on-screen keyboard?????? because scrolling down the wikipedia list everytime i wanna write out something is Not Convenient

I’m back!

I’m sorry for not posting for multiple days but I was busy studying for my IELTS. I had the exam yesterday and I think I will get a 8 or over on everything except for speaking because I had a total blackout and effed that up completely. I was so ashamed when I got out hahaa. But I’m sure I will get my required band 6 for uni so I’m not that upset. From now on y’all will see a lot more from me again!
