I still wake up every now and then rehashing the argument I have with myself explaining how post war industrialization led to this. But, like - :/
I can figure that the Fire Nation were huge drivers of mass production, maybe with a thematic nod to China during the Warring States period, while the Water Tribe and Air Nomads probably watched them from afar and were like ‘wow those guys over there seem excessive and wasteful’ until, boom, genocide.
Then after the war, there might be a cultural shift in the WT where mass production starts to seem like a good idea if you think it might help prevent a genocide/invasion again in future. EK seem like they’d be pro-mass production already because they’d have big population centres and and lots of fancy resources waste to and/or fight over.
But I’m still not sure that a world like this would produce, for example, an asian Calvin Coolidge who may or may not be able to axe kick so hard that objects burst into flames.
It’s a weird one because in my experience, if i pick up a random book on economics, it’s Keynes Keynes Keynes Western Countries Fucking Everybody In The Ass GDP Growth etc. But it’s not like Western countries were the only ones who placed a strong importance on commerce. I want to go off on a tangent about the Chinese Empire here but my knowledge of Chinese history can be written on the back of a postage stamp, so I’ll stop.
