Upon awakening in a daze, you struggled to recall your whereabouts. The air felt heavy, as if it could be sliced with a knife. An unsettling feeling washed over you, abruptly pulling your mind back from a state of ecstasy to the harsh reality. Letting out a sigh, you turned to your left and noticed a man lying beside you. It took a moment for you to comprehend what had transpired.
"Shit, shit, shit," you muttered, hastily getting up and retrieving your clothes from the floor, pulling your shirt over your messy hair.
You had done it again.
It all began when your boyfriend, Alejandro, was deployed. Overwhelmed by loneliness and sadness, you wanted to escape the emptiness that engulfed you. And that stranger became a temporary remedy for your agony. Although guilt didn't weigh heavily on your conscience, there was a bittersweet allure that you found hard to resist.
Cheating was something you despised. Yet the rush of adrenaline coursing through your veins as you navigated the streets after spending a night with a complete stranger was undeniably intoxicating.
Alejandro was a good man, indeed. He loved and appreciated you. However, in his absence, all that remained for you was anguish, solitude, and worry. You knew it was wrong, but deep down, you couldn't deny the allure of this forbidden pleasure.
Your mind was clouded, and for the first time, a sickening feeling churned in your stomach. The few people you encountered on your way home cast disapproving glances, as if they were privy to your actions. Desperately hiding the hickey on your neck, you fumbled with your keys, trying to gain entry into the house. Leaving your shoes by the door, you glanced at the clock in the hallway—it was almost four in the morning. Coming home at such an hour was a grave mistake.
Everything appeared as you had left it hours ago, but the sickening feeling grew more persistent. As you made your way towards the bedroom, a whisper, dripping with sarcasm and anguish, halted your steps.
"You could have at least brought a jacket with you. It's cold at this hour, amor."
Alejandro looked up from his seat, his dark eyes devoid of emotion yet filled with a calm that bordered on terrifying. Unease settled within you. When had he returned? Did he know about your affair?
You coughed, tugging on your scarf, and forced a smile as you looked at him. "You didn't tell me you'd be back..."
Alejandro remained silent. He slowly approached you, gently undoing the knot on your scarf, allowing the fabric to fall to the floor. He held your chin, tilting your head to the side, revealing the hickey on your neck. Calmly, his eyes empty but brimming with disappointment and hurt, his thumb traced the mark, causing your flesh to burn under his touch.
"I wish I hadn't come back," he confessed, his eyes closed, a solitary tear rolling down his cheek. He released his grip on you, returning to his seat on the couch. "I had faith in you. For six months, you told me you loved me, and yet... you did this behind my back... mentiroso."
Guilt painted your face, and once again, you felt like a child caught stealing cookies. But this playful innocent crime paled in comparison to your infidelity. Your face grew clouded, tears of embarrassment streaming down your cheeks as you looked down in shame.
"I'm so—"
"Keep it, amor," he spat out the name as if it were a slur. A sob escaped your lips as you slowly retreated to your chamber. He murmured, taking a sip from the glass in his hand as he rested his head on the couch. "Out of all people, I believed you would be the last one to betray me, amor. How funny."
His words pierced your heart like a dagger, as if someone had torn your ribs apart, shattering the delicate muscle within. Closing the bathroom door behind you, you stood beneath the shower, cold water soaking your hair and clothes. Hoping that the bath would cleanse you, sober your mind.
The once alluring feeling now turned sour, leaving a bitter taste in your mouth, consuming you from within. You almost wished it would purge you clean, but it wouldn't. You were tainted, and no matter how hard you tried, this act of infidelity would be permanently etched on your face—a cruel mark that would torment your mind and soul for eternity.
You weren't a religious person, but in silence, you prayed for Alejandro's forgiveness. Resting your head against the cold wall of the shower stall, you realized the weight of your mistakes. Would you ever be able to make amends in this lifetime? Or would it take centuries for your lover to look at your face again with love and trust?
