here’s my final for my intro to motion graphics class!! all the art and editing is done by me, and the song is “Angel” by kairiki bear. it may not have been what my teacher wanted, but i’m super happy with it for what i know.

[Updated, 10.02.13] Shingeki no Kyojin: 進撃の巨人-Before the Fall- Angel & Kyklo, Character Summaries
I decided to research more into the 3 prequel light novels that were recently released in Japan, feeling quite curious as to the origins, hints, and potential connections to the current series.
Although I can’t say that this is totally reliable since I’m going by things that were collected on wiki and reviews on personal blogs, I hope many of you will enjoy it and feel something click in your heads as we try to figure out this dark and enigmatic world of titans and humans.
(WARNING! SPOILERS FOR THOSE NOT FOLLOWING THE MANGA OR INTENDING TO READ THE NOVELS. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.)
Ángel Altonen
The first main character of volume 1 is named Ángel Altonen (age.18), and he is the creator of the 3D Maneuver Gear.
Angel was part of the Scouting Legion at the time, and was a first-class weapons craftsman (I think it was a family business-type thing) who was determined to create mankind’s ultimate weapon against the Titans, as well as to discover the weak spot that would defeat them.(A big “Ha!” To those guys who thought the people who worked in factories were cowards. Xp)
From what it appears in the book, Angel witnessed his friend die before his eyes as a Titan killed him, and that’s what drove his determination to create the weapon and find the weakness even faster.
Unfortunately the gear proved very difficult to handle for the soldiers, and even more so getting to the Titan’s nape of the neck to deliver the fatal blow. It’s not really certain whether it was a complete success or not around Angel’s time, or if he'd managed to survive all the tests he'd made on his invention. However it isn’t the last time it was used.
Kyklo or Kyukuro Munsell
(The pronunciation of this guy’s name is something like ‘Q-klow’? ^^; )
About 12 years after Angel had created the 3D Maneuver Gear, a new character enters the stage in volumes 2 and 3. During a mission outside the wall by the Scouting Legion, they discover a bizarre scene of a mass of titan carcasses in flames.
Among them is a vomit of humans that they had consumed recently…with an infant still alive inside it.
(I don’t really know how) But the Legion was able to identify the child’s parents as Heath and Elena Munsell, and after taking him back into the wall named him Kyklo (meaning ‘Cyclops’ in German) since it appeared he was blind in one eye. From the few pictures of him it looks like he has a habit of closing the one eye that doesn’t work, even when he was fighting.
...Somehow I feel like giving that kind of name was also because they deemed him a monster among them; which is not far from the truth seeing as most of the people within the wall considered him a curse upon them and didn't trust him to the point they locked him in a cage until he grew up. (Quasimodo much? XD)
In addition to being blind in one eye, Kyklo also undergoes an unnatural rapid growth as he matures (so that likely means he got pretty damn tall by the time he’s a teenager-duh- XD), which only furthers the suspicion of what he is.
At some point Kyklo decides to join the Scouting Legion in order to fight the titans and put his faith in mankind’s survival. Whether it’s because he wanted them to accept him or to fight against his past origins is not really certain, though one could venture to guess those are valid reasons for it. Either way it doesn’t seem like he bares the people any ill-will.
Kyklo (now age. 15 or 16) eventually gets his hands on the 3D Maneuver Gear and tries to use it in battle. His results were mostly disastrous since the gear was still imperfect, and nearly got himself killed in one such incident (according to the few who read it).
But I think he eventually was able to do it, and most likely became the first person to effectively use the gear to the fullest.
-Moment to appreciate what a badass this guy is for using a weapon he hardly knew how to use AND with one eye on top of it (O w O |||);;-
According to the updated sources on the SnK wikia, the plots of Before the Fall were things that happened 70 years prior to the current Shingeki series. What became of these two characters is a mystery, but it’s quite evident that their appearances are defining moments in history.
And when you look at their names, it’s kind of ironic how the two would be viewed; ‘Angel,’ a being who brings about hope and salvation. ‘Cyclops,’ a titan who brings about despair and misfortune.
And yet despite that these two figures together gave humans the window of opportunity to fight back instead of remaining the helpless preys that they’ve been for thousands of years.
A few thoughts come to mind as I connect them to the current series; such as the titans discovering/identifying Angel’s weapon (referring to the chapter of Mike’s encounter with the Ape-like Titan) and Kyklo’s curious life which may or may not connect to titan transformations.
My wild theories don’t usually turn out right, but I definitely feel like Isayama might bring them up in the future as the story progresses.
Even if he wasn’t the one to write the novels himself (they were written by Ryo Suzukaze), he is the one who originally created the series, and therefore he was likely a direct source for these two along with the scientist/specialist who helped in the 3D Maneuver Gear .
There are still many mysteries yet to be solved, and Angel and Kyklo are but the many threads of possibilities that could lead us to something incredible.
