Just want to share a fun fact I learned today: the English word “chameleon” traces to Latin “chamaeleōn “, a borrowing from Ancient Greek “khamailéōn”, which can be broken down to “on the ground” and “lion”. So a chameleon is a “lion on the ground”. One theory behind this says it’s because a chameleon’s head crest looks like a lions mane. In Chinese, chameleons are called 变(biàn)色(sè)龙(lóng), or “color-changing dragon”.
