Occasionally we hear about guinea pigs who really need help as a matter or urgency. Yesterday we heard about a group of pigs needing immediate help.
Stories like this frustrate me. There is no need for any animal to suffer due to ignorance with the technology we have today. There are many groups and single people who will help. I’m sorry to rant, but I have spent 24 hours thinking about this situation.
So yesterday I was contacted about a group of five pigs that needed help. I have two of them here, a mother and daughter, and a friend has three, father and two daughters.
The mother is malnourished with severe hair thinning and loss. She has been bred four times! The last two times were back to back pregnancies meaning, she got pregnant as soon as she delivered her babies. Her body is depleted. She was not given the correct nutrition. There is a real danger she is pregnant again!
I also have one of her daughters here. She is six to eight weeks old. Beautiful baby, but she was housed with her father. She could also be pregnant. Dangerous at her age. She is a baby herself, possibly pregnant with her own babies. At best we can hope she delivers safely, but her own growth will be stunted. Not a good situation, and one that needs careful monitoring.
The family of pigs were kept in filthy conditions. Layers and layers of poop. No bedding could be seen. The feed bowl was half full of poop with rabbit pellets on top.
The girls have not stopped eating since they arrived. They will be here for a few months on a pregnancy watch and to get mom back to good health.
My heart is sad for these girls, but they are safe now. They did come with names, but they need a fresh start, so if you can think of names for this mother and daughter pair, please comment.
